A 59-year-old Wagener man died this afternoon in a single-vehicle wreck on U.S. Highway 278 near S.C. Highway 19.

Donnie Ray Swartz died at the scene, according to a statement from the Aiken County Coroner’s Office. He was the driver of a Jennings Sanitation truck traveling west on Highway 278 when he lost control of the truck on a narrow bridge, striking the guardrail in both lanes, and causing the vehicle to overturn, the release states.

Mr. Swartz was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from the truck.

Two passengers in the truck, also from Wagener and co-workers of Mr. Swartz, suffered minor injuries. The cause of the crash is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The wreck marks Aiken County’s 24th fatal crash this year.
