Richmond County Superintendent Dana Bedden will recommend transferring Josey High School Assistant Principal Gregory Thompson to take over as principal of Butler High School effective Oct. 1, he said at a news conference today.

Citing academic and discipline concerns, Dr. Bedden said the situation at Butler requires immediate action. Mr. Thompson, who is in his 19th year as an educator, formerly served as principal of Strom Thurmond High School in Edgefield County.

The superintendent also put students and faculty at Butler on notice. Anyone not supposed to be at the school will be arrested for trespassing, and staff members will no longer be allowed to go to Butler simply to wait around for retirement. Some employees have done well at Butler, but others have not, Dr. Bedden said.

Dr. Walter Reeves, Butler’s current principal, will be recommended for a transfer to Hephzibah High School to replace Dr. Veta New who is retiring at the end of the month to take a position with the Georgia Department of Education.
