Federer wins U.S. Open

NEW YORK - Roger Federer moved one title closer to Pete Sampras for the most Grand Slam championships, with his 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 win over Andy Murray in the men's singles final at the U.S. Open.

Federer had to wait until Monday, an extra day, before winning his fifth consecutive U.S. Open title as the effects of Tropical Storm Hanna disrupted play over the weekend.

Federer had been shut out of the major title picture through the first three events of 2008 before winning the U.S Open for his 13th career Grand Slam crown, leaving him behind only Sampras' 14 on the all-time list.
