Augusta State men's golf coach Josh Gregory defeated Californian Scott Hardy, 3 and 1, in the opening round of match play today in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at Milwaukee Country Club in Milwaukee.

Gregory advanced out of stroke play as the No. 28 seed in the 64-player field. Against Hardy, Gregory shot 1-over through 17 holes, using 14 pars to win his match.

He advances to play the winner of the match between Georgian David Noll and Floridian Garrett Morrison - currently on the course - at 8:30 Tuesday morning. If Gregory can win his second match, he will advance to play in Tuesday afternoon's round of 16.
