The threat of Tropical Storm Hanna has forced more than a dozen teams to scramble their weekly schedules so they can play football tonight.
Among the most notable games that have been moved to tonight: Silver Bluff travels to Aiken, South Aiken plays host to North Augusta and Washington-Wilkes plays host to Thomson.
Most teams practiced on Labor Day, which will give them three practices in between tonight’s game and last Friday’s contest.
“We’ve got most of the game plan ready now anyway,” Silver Bluff coach Al Lown said Wednesday. “We’ll be OK.”
Richmond County schools will still play Friday. If the weather becomes too severe, they will play on Saturday at 7 p.m., said Richmond County athletic director George Bailey.
Bailey noted that the county’s junior varsity teams begin play tonight. If the varsity games were moved up a day, it would have created even more scheduling havoc, he said.
“Then we’d be changing around two sets of games,” Bailey said. “It looked like the storm had dissipated some (Wednesday afternoon), so we hope we can stay on this (current) schedule.”
Both matchups of Columbia County teams (Greenbrier at Harlem; Lakeside at Evans) will take place on Friday.
Harlem and Lakeside will both open their season Friday and have been pointing toward their first opponent for months. They would have been the fresher team had the games been bumped up a day, coaches said.
Evans and Greenbrier met last Friday (the Knights won 7-0) and would have had only three days of practice in between games.
“Friday works out well for us, I’m glad we’re going to play then,” Evans coach Marty Jackson said.
