From Staff and Wire Reports
The threat of inclement weather caused by Tropical Storm Hanna has caused three local high school games to be moved to Thursday.
Lincoln County will travel to McCormick for a 7 p.m. contest, and South Aiken will play host to North Augusta at 7:30. Burke County will play at Ware County and kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Both games were originally scheduled for Friday.
T.W. Josey head football coach Barney Chavous said he was also keeping an eye on the weather and there’s a possibility that Josey’s home opener against Hephzibah on Friday could get moved to Thursday.
“We’ll probably be discussing that and talk about it,” he said. “It’s no fun in the rain – no fun for fans or no one.”
Other sporting events in Georgia and South Carolina that could be affected by the weather:
-- The first round of the South Atlantic League playoffs are scheduled to wrap up this weekend, but SAL President Eric Krupa said the weather may make that difficult.
“We’re monitoring it. There are all sorts of different scenarios related to the playoffs that have been developed over the course of the years, and we’ll stick to them,” he said. “Yes, a double-header in the playoffs is a possibility.”
The GreenJackets’ first-round series against the Asheville Tourists will move to Asheville for Games 2 and 3 on Friday and Saturday. Krupa said neither of those games will be moved up ahead of the storms.
“If anything, they’ll be pushed back,” he said. “They’re scheduled for the 5th and the 6th, and we have the 7th as a fall-back date for a double-header if necessary. Our goal is to not push back the championship series on the 8th.”
-- Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern may reschedule their home games Saturday.
Officials at both schools said any decision about whether to reschedule must be made by today to give opponents enough time to adjust.
The Chanticleers are scheduled to host Colgate at 7 p.m. Saturday. Coastal Carolina coach David Bennett said officials are considering moving the game to Thursday or Sunday.
The Buccaneers host Wofford at 1:30 p.m. Charleston Southern coach Jay Mills said his bosses hope to make a decision before Wednesday afternoon.
