Area SAT scores drop

Average scores on the SAT, a college entrance exam, fell a few points this year in area school systems, according to results released this morning.

Richmond County slipped by 4 points to 1,383; Columbia County dropped 13 points to 1,500; and Aiken County fell 4 points to 1,474.

Overall, Georgia slid 19 points to 1,453, while South Carolina improved two points from 2007 to 1,461. The two-point increase follows a steady 34-point rise in math and reading scores since 1998, according to the South Carolina Department of Education.

Nationally, scores remained stable at 1,511 despite an increase in the number of test-takers.
