A narcotics investigator with the Aiken County Sheriff's Office has been fired, Sheriff Michael Hunt announced today.

Daniel Gainey, 37, of Williston, S.C., was terminated

of his duties after an internal probe on Monday found Mr. Gainey had operated a personal business while on duty and didn't properly complete time sheets of employees under his supervision, according to a sheriff's office news release.

Sheriff Hunt also has called for a criminal investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

“I have asked SLED to investigate another allegation involving the use of excessive force,” Sheriff Hunt said in the release.

Mr. Gainey has been employed by the sheriff's office since December 2001, serving as a lieutenant in the narcotics section since October 2007.
