THOMSON, Ga. – An Augusta bank robbery suspect was taken into custody this morning after being spotted traveling down Interstate 20 near Thomson.

Investigator Sgt. Ken Rogers of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department identified the suspect as Donald Bernard Kelly, 42, of the 300 block of Victoria Drive in Ellenwood -- an Atlanta suburb.

He was taken into custody without incident at 10:45 a.m. by a number of state troopers from the Georgia State Patrol post from Thomson, according to Trooper Lt. David Cody.

The suspect was taken back to Richmond County where he was charged with felony robbery, according to investigators.

Mr. Kelly is suspected of robbing the Wachovia Bank, located at 3535 Wheeler Road in Richmond County. Sgt. Rogers said a man walked into the bank, presented a note and retrieved an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing in a blue Ford Taurus. A weapon was not used, authorities said.

Most of the money was recovered with the suspect's capture, police said.

A customer spotted the robbery suspect coming out of the bank with his hands and pockets full of cash and decided to pursue him when he drove away, investigators said.

The customer alerted authorities by cell telephone.
