Thurmond Lake avoids holiday drownings; 5 die elsewhere

Five people died in drowning accidents across Georgia during the long July Fourth weekend, but no fatalities were reported at Thurmond Lake, according to Georgia’s Wildlife Resources Division.

“We had nothing much to report in your area,” said WRD spokeswoman Jennifer Barnes.

During June, three drownings were reported at Thurmond Lake, where low water levels have left many protected swimming areas unusable and caused more visitors to swim in unfamiliar areas.

Statewide, four of the five July Fourth weekend drownings occurred at Lake Lanier, near Atlanta, Ms. Barnes said. The fifth occurred at a lake in south Georgia.

Wildlife officers also made 28 arrests statewide for boating under the influence of alcohol; and investigated 19 boating accidents, she said.
