Former Silver Bluff High School star Demetrius Washington has signed with the Los Angeles Angels this afternoon and is scheduled to report to the Angels’ Arizona League team in rookie ball on Thursday.

He received a $25,000 signing bonus.

Washington, who just wrapped up his freshman year at Middle Georgia College, was drafted by the Angels in the 35th round of this year’s Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft with the 1,069th overall pick.

“They like my speed, and the way I play the game,” Washington said. “My hitting has come around a lot since last year.”

Washington was also drafted last year by the Pirates with the 1,221st overall pick but elected to go to college instead. He hit .362 with 45 runs and 29 RBI during his freshman season at Middle Georgia.
