Former Augusta Mayor Bob Young is telling friends that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and plans to travel to the famed Mayo Clinic for treatment.
Mr. Young, now a federal housing official, sent out an e-mail Monday in which he said: "We caught it early through routine screening. I'll be going to the Mayo Clinic this summer for surgery. My doctor anticipates a complete recovery.
"In the past couple of days I've learned a lot about prostate cancer, the Mayo Clinic and especially my friends who have fought their own battles with the enemy that has invaded my body," the former mayor wrote. "But, most important I have discovered a powerful prayer network that will give me and my family the strength to face my new challenge."
The former mayor and TV anchorman told friends both by e-mail and telephone that he plans to have surgery in the weeks ahead. He will also undergo recovery treatment for six weeks afterward, said an associate, who did not want to be identified.
Phone calls and e-mails sent to Mr. Young on Monday afternoon and evening were not returned.
