ATLANTA, Ga. -- A new InsiderAdvantage/Majority Opinion survey of Georgia shows that Sen. John McCain would have a significant lead over either Sen. Hillary Clinton or Sen. Barack Obama if the General Election were held today.
Most notable is the fact that the vast percentage of Republicans say they would support McCain, as would over 50 per cent of the state's independent voters.
If the election were held today:
McCain: 47 percent
Clinton: 40 percent
No Opinion/Undecided: 13 percent
McCain: 48 percent
Obama: 40 percent
No Opinion/Undecided: 12 percent
Survey sample: 594 registered voters; weighted for age, race, gender, and political affiliation. Conducted February 13. Margin of error +/- 3.5 percent.
Eighty-six percent of Republicans said they would vote for McCain against Clinton. Eighty-three percent said they would vote for McCain against Obama.
In both contests independents voters said they would vote for McCain by a 52 percent-to-30 percent margin. Among Democrats, 75 percent said they would vote for Clinton. Sixty-nine percent of Democrats said they would vote for Obama. In all cases the small remainder of identified Republicans and Democrats overwhelmingly said they were undecided.
