Rants and Raves

Comments from our readers:

I HAVE ALWAYS voted for the individual, not any political party, but should this bill pass that the Democrats are pushing and cause my health care costs to climb, then I will be forced to rethink my way of voting.

IT SEEMS LIKE the only person down at the marble palace who was doing his job competently the night of the break-in at the tax commissioner's office was the janitor. Sounds likes that janitor deserves a promotion.

TO THE RANTER that thinks one election will sweep the GOP back into power: Let's just see what party the next governor of Georgia is from.

WE WANT TO THANK the gentleman and his young son for paying for our breakfast at Sunrise. We also want him to know that his kindness will be passed on by us in hopes of starting a chain of thoughtfulness and kindness. Thank you again, and God bless you.

A BIG THANK YOU to the Richmond County Board of Education's Vice President Alex Howard for looking at other ways to cut costs. Teachers are tired of being furloughed and receiving pay cuts. I am sure there are other areas cuts can be made instead of hurting the teachers.

THE VERY FACT that some school board members want to implement a four-day school week in the middle of a school year indicates they have no substantive, researched plan in mind. They want to save gas money by cheating the kids and their parents.

OBAMA IS ALLOWING Americans to write off charitable donations to Haiti, given in 2010, on their 2009 income tax returns. What gives the president such authority, to simply, at his political whim, change our tax laws? Why is no one in Washington even looking into such arrogance?

CAN ANYONE TELL ME why a security officer at Fort Gordon was talking on a cell phone during the afternoon traffic on Wednesday?

LET'S RENAME "The Garden City." We should call it "The Pothole City."

A DEMOCRATIC congressman says Obama has to help sell health care reform. Am I the only one that has seen Obama several times every day selling his agenda? Now he is on the campaign trail again selling his new "jobs creating stimulus bill." The last one cost us $413,000 per job.

SCHOOL ZONES begin at the flashing lights and end with the "end of school zone" sign. Stop passing other cars while still in the school zone in front of Copeland Elementary before someone gets killed. If the Richmond County Sheriff's Office wants to make some money it needs to hang around Copeland.

Picture it. A 4-day school

Picture it. A 4-day school week. And on the 5thday, all those kids that are out of school for the day are liberated to run free through the streets of Augusta. Woohoo!

Parents are responsible for

Parents are responsible for making their kids responsible. Loosing kids on the streets one day a week (except for weekends) without structure and supervision is bound to produce problems. That should be factored into the equation when they analyze the proposal.

Trouble, the parents are

Trouble, the parents are being cheated because they either have to find day care or someone to watch their kids while they work that day, or just let the kids run loose. Unfortunately, the economy today makes it necessary for both parents to work in most families and if they both have day jobs, they have to make special arrangements when the children will be out of school on a weekday.

Place the blame where it

Place the blame where it belongs for the 4 day work week... The school board is given a budget and set of parameters that must be met with that budget. There is not enough money there to do things the traditional way so they are discussing alternatives. The real problem is the budget. Schools are funded by federal, state and local dollars. Education isn't getting prioritized in the financial pecking order. That doesn't suprise me though as many parents out there don't give it any priority either. They don't supply their kids with even the basics: pen, pencil, paper, folders etc. Until we as a collective people demand education come first, these types of cuts and create budget solutions will continue.

And if the school system

And if the school system would provide the clothing for them the parents wouldn't have to do anything, such as get involved with them and keep them out of trouble. From some of the posts on here I am shocked. I didn't know you could use an EBT card to purchase a computer!!

a: In an era when party politics are in decline, ranter promises to vote straight ticket. Welcome to 1952. b: I dunno about a promotion, but I fear the janitor may have already gotten a huge cash bonus. c: If the next Gov of GA can help create jobs and reduce taxes, I don't care if he's from the Communist party. d: Pay it forward, it's a great way to live. e: In tough times, all must tighten their belts, even the fat people. f: Are folks complaining about possible 4 days school or are they complaining more of the loss of 5 day babysitting? g: Sure, write off those donations, but don't let the evil rich people continue supporting private charity the rest of the year. h: He was talking about nosy people passing thru the gate. i: Roads in this area are better than any other area. j: Obama is a great salesperson, no doubt about that. His customers are famous for being victims of consumer rip-offs. k: EVERY school zone has idiots flying through. Seeing someone being ticketed in a school zone always warms my heart. Have you hugged a law enforcement official today?

NNOO He gets it

NNOO He gets it allright,,,(on another thread) He will do an about face on his speech,,People are so mad about THEIR job loss, benefits,, savings,,how can U justify BIG AXX BONUS when you just got bailed out by the taxpayer?? Party voting will be loong gone for these folks,,Mass. was just a wakeup call for BOTH parties,, so don't gloat & think the reps. will benefit from this. If the reps. don't reform health care the right way, they too will suffer..Million of folks are suffering from loss of jobs,,it ain't over yet. Voting will never be the same..

Forget about the potholes.

Forget about the potholes. The repaving of the 1000 12X20 foot parking spaces downtown (meter installation) will consume all our funds for road repair, But on the bright side we will have places to plant some fine flowers for masters, if the drivers will just try to avoid them.

While on the subject of

While on the subject of school zones, a cop should also be placed at Tutt. Traffic backs up for blocks and drivers just use the one open lane to go in either direction. A dangerous situation and one that needs a policeman, one that will stop the craziness and not just ignore it because...well, you know.

Perhaps noone should watch

Perhaps noone should watch the State of the Union Address. Obama likes thing done behind closed doors, fears transparency, and has already been on TV daily wasting our time with his attempts to persuade us that he knows best. What more can he possibly say?
