Basketball league for white Americans targets Augusta

  • Follow NBA

A new professional basketball league boasting rosters made up exclusively of white Americans has its eyes set on Augusta, but the team isn't receiving a warm welcome.

The All-American Basketball Alliance announced in a news release Sunday evening that it intends to start its inaugural season in June and hopes Augusta will be one of 12 cities with a team.

"Only players that are natural born United States citizens with both parents of Caucasian race are eligible to play in the league," the statement said.

Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver, who has publicly expressed his support for minor league teams in the past, said he would not do the same for this team.

"As a sports enthusiast, I have always supported bringing more sporting activities to Augusta," he said. "However, in this instance I could not support in good conscience bringing in a team that did not fit with the spirit of inclusiveness that I, along with many others, have worked so hard to foster in our city."

Clint Bryant, athletic director at Augusta State University, laughed when he heard the news.

"It's so absurd, it's funny, but it gives you an idea of the sickness of our society" he said. "It shows you what lengths people will go to just to be mean-spirited. I think at any basketball level, no matter if it's all black, all white, all Hispanic, all Asian or anyone else, the players should just be a basketball team."

Don "Moose" Lewis, the commissioner of the AABA, said the reasoning behind the league's roster restrictions is not racism.

"There's nothing hatred about what we're doing," he said. "I don't hate anyone of color. But people of white, American-born citizens are in the minority now. Here's a league for white players to play fundamental basketball, which they like."

Lewis said he wants to emphasize fundamental basketball instead of "street-ball" played by "people of color." He pointed out recent incidents in the NBA, including Gilbert Arenas' indefinite suspension after bringing guns into the Washington Wizards locker room, as examples of fans' dissatisfaction with the way current professional sports are run.

"Would you want to go to the game and worry about a player flipping you off or attacking you in the stands or grabbing their crotch?" he said. "That's the culture today, and in a free country we should have the right to move ourselves in a better direction."

The Atlanta-based league, which will operate as a single-entity owning all of its teams, is looking for local contacts to pay $10,000 to become a "licensee" in one of 12 cities throughout the Southeast. Lewis said he has already received threats from people opposed to the roster restrictions and several cities have told him to stay out of town. Lewis said he has yet to hear from any one in Augusta.

"We need a local person ingrained into the community to make this successful," he said.

Lewis said he expects to eventually find support in every town with a team.

"People will come out and support a product they can identify with. I'm the spoken minority right now, but if people will give us a chance, it'll work... The white game of basketball, which is essentially a fundamental game, works."

Lewis said he wasn't sure where the team will play.

Augusta has had problems with minor league basketball teams in the past, but the issues never centered around race. The Augusta Drive lasted less than a month before folding in 1995, citing financial reasons. The Augusta Groove made it through a full, 20-game schedule in 2009, but accusations from players and local businesses that the team wasn't paying its bills surrounded the team during the second half of the season. The team later shut down in the offseason.

you are right, there are

you are right, there are all-black things like Miss Black America. The reason this basketball league is racist is not because it is all-white. It's racist because it says it will be better because it is all-white. It is saying that recent problems (like the guns in the locker room) will be fixed if you switch to using white players. That is saying that whites are nicer than blacks.

If I want to watch a low

If I want to watch a low scoring game with lots of dribbling, passing, lay-ups and 3 pointers... I'll watch the WNBA. The ladies would probably beat every team in this worthless league.
WORST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED IN THIS COUNTRY IS THAT THEY GIVE PARTICIPATION TROPHIES, THIS LEAGUE IS PRIME EXAMPLE.
Get over it and grow a pair you guys, learn to compete or start wearing a skirt.

A few points here. Anything

A few points here. Anything that has African-American, Black, Colored, or any other adjective of that nature is going to have the connotation that it is only for those groups, regardless of the truth behind it. I went to Xavier University in New Orleans - one of those Historically Black Colleges - back in the 90s. There were indeed a few Caucasians and Asians who attended, but let's be honest here - is your first choice of college going to be a place that seems to disallow you, even if that's not the truth? It's like a store entitled Big and Tall that in fact has clothes for the Short and Small too - the Short and Petite section of the populous isn't going to head to that store for their clothing needs, even if those needs would be met there.

That may seem unrelated to the original topic of this article - namely because the league in question wouldn't serve anyone other than Whites, however, there is a cultural incongruence there. Namely, what is White Culture, exactly? Whites come from a myriad of backgrounds, and I can guarantee you that the boys listening to Limp Bizkit are not going to see eye to eye with the ones who favor Tim McGraw. By saying 'this is for us to be proud of our White Culture' I have to ask, are you talking about Marylin Manson or Marylin Monroe here? Is it really all the same?

Blacks, Latinos, Asians, they tend to have a (somewhat) cohesive culture in terms of shared values, though there are variances there as well. That's what the cultural exclusivity is trying to preserve - the part that is uniquely different from the fragmented 'Whiteness' that is America.

Our skin color (yes, I am a Black woman) tells you where our ancestors came from, more or less. White people could have (and do) come from any number of places. Not a bad thing on either side, just the truth. According to Mr. Lewis, just being White is enough to ensure that you are a viable, productive member of society, with no urges to grab your crotch or make disparaging comments or perhaps punch someone who is in the stands who has made a particularly inflammatory comment (not that anyone would make such comments in the stands if everyone were White).

I confess, I'm confused. My White friends who enjoyed mosh pits back in the day sure were more dangerous than I was, considering that I stuck to Beta and Theatre as my main distractions (and yes, I grew up in a small southern town, not too far from Augusta, actually) though we were all equally estranged by the 'good ol' boy' segment of the population. Am I to believe that underneath all the leather and tattoos, there lives a soul of meekness and genteel basketball fundamentals? Well, ok, if you say so - but that means that they have a lot of self-policing to do before that league will be anything like they say it will be.

I think We (the collective We of humanity) need to understand that for people like "Moose" there is no changing beliefs, and no fostering understanding. His version of reality does not mesh with what the majority of intelligent, well-rounded, reasonable people know to be the truth. Unfortunately, there is a segment of the population that will always ascribe to that reality. We have to learn to let go, disengage, and move on. Meeting rudeness for rudeness solves nothing.

You want to strike out against this type of thing, then form a league based on fundamentals and make it inclusive. Don't sit here and harp about how "all Southerners are inbred, welfare-having, trailer park living, bbq-sauce drinking miscreants" because it's simply not true. Likewise, don't talk about how "all Northerners are elitist, lying, baby seal wearing, no-good fiends" because that's also not true.

If you want to be inclusionist, how about including some people you don't personally like? Want to spread tolerance? Why not try tolerating the [filtered word]-hat that lives near you first, before moving on to other areas of the country? And consider this - Moose is doing us all a favor by gathering people together that we can assume have no wish to associate with Blacks. This makes it easy to identify who you need to keep an eye on, and who's probably lying when they say 'some of my best friends are Black'.

An easy way to know who to keep an eye on, in my opinion and a short-list of who to start questioning first if there are ever any hate crimes committed in the area. Should thank him, really.

To obkad and rauthur336, To

To obkad and rauthur336,

To ask “why this is racism” is redundant; unless neither of you have a clear definition of what racism is. The NAACP, UNCF or any organization that promote positive virtues and inclusiveness are not racist. Nor do they have the financial power to control economic, educational or political ideals that have been used to keep racially disadvantage groups down. These organizations were established to give those who historically were refused and limited in opportunity and fairness at a chance to fulfill their constitutional dreams and build self esteem along the way.

So let’s clarify racism; which is the belief that you by virtue of your racial background you feel superior to others who do not share your racial ancestry (exclusionary in principle). To make matters worse the institutionalized form of this false belief says those in power must destroy and minimize opportunities to those considered inferior (colored people, Blacks, Native Americans, Asians, Hispanics etc.) as well as annihilate their racial genetics. Keep them in their place as General Lee once said, God forbid they realize they are human with potential to rival their fellow man.

Racism is a fearful disease that causes Caucasian people to behave badly, maybe out fear, maybe ignorance but (burning crosses, the religious symbol of Christ who supposedly died for the sin of the human race), and using fear and terrorism as weapons i.e. the clan and other violent white hate groups, and miseducating others out of fear) is the legacy of racism.

This in turn has caused people in general to respond with prejudice and discrimination. If you guys bothered to learn any history what so ever you would be well aware of this fact. For example; Slavery in the Americas, Indian wars of America, Japanese internment camps of WWII, segregation etc. If you research the organizations you criticize and misrepresent you would find that they are inclusive and about building positive changes within our society as a whole. Any group which chooses to do the opposite of helping humanity as a whole will only further hinder our growth as a species. Without diversity we all perish…

Dear Northern Aggressor, If

Dear Northern Aggressor,

If you want to argue statistics, then you need to realize that New Hampshire is 94.9 % white and 1% black, New Jersey is 70.6 % white and 13.6 % black, Connecticut is 79.9% white and 9.4% black, Illinois is 71.4% white and 14.6% black, while Minnesota is 74.3% white and 4.4% black for an average of a whopping 78.2% white and a miserable 8.6% black.
On the other hand, Mississippi is 60.0% white and 37.1% black, Alabama is 70.4% white and 26.3% black, Arkansas is 78.6% white and 15.5% black, for a total of 69.66% white and 26.3% black in these truly southern states.
So to say that the black Northerners’ taxes are helping out the white Southerners with federal aide is simply regionalist and racist crap. Looks like the truth is just the opposite, unless you meant a handful of basketball pros who probably mostly live in the north (and Oprah).

To argue against your other point that you had no help in building your industrial base, which is crumbling in many areas of the north, after the civil war, US funds went to the more populated northern states who won the war by outnumbering the South with white people imported from Europe via NYC. (population=federal dollars) Hence, your infrastructure, which was already better in the industrialized North, became even better, while Southerners’ (whose infrastructure was destroyed by northern aggression) only hope to receive money from the feds was to keep our senators in office forever. (pork barrel deals) Hence, Strom Thurmond, et al.

The inequities continue to this day. (Federal bail out based on population) You only have to look at Pennsylvania Avenue and compare it to South Carolina Street in DC to see the disparity and bias against the South after the Civil war. Reconstruction was a joke. When textiles were big in the North, you wanted tariffs imposed against foreign goods. When the South called for tariffs just a few years ago, you hollered free trade and totally destroyed the textile industry in the South. And the main reason we have those foreign car makers is NO UNIONS. Too bad for y’all.

Anybody can quote stats, read a book.

TO NORTHERN AGRESSOR Let’s

TO NORTHERN AGRESSOR

Let’s see. Mega bank, Bank of America, North Carolina. You said Minnesota has Target. That is the 2nd largest retailer. Arkansas has Walmart; you claimed Arkansas was southern, didn’t you? That is the second largest employer in the US besides the US Government, where a lot of northern jobs were created by taxing everybody else. Let’s see though: the CIA is in Virginia, so does that make our intelligence quotient go up or down? You have some ignorant biased statements you consider facts about our part of the world.

We accept the fact that racism has hurt the South in that having dual schools was expensive and inefficient. We accept the fact that lynching regrettably occurred as did slavery, which was originally a Spanish idea that some agrarian southerners stole. By the way, lynching occurred in Chicago as late as the twenties, which is about the time it ended in the South. But to think that the North is some kind of nirvana which is home to blacks who hold up the South is just as ignorant as the people you condemn.

And you want your cake and eat it too. On the one hand, you ignore the large populations of blacks who live in the rural South, called the black belt. But you welcome the idea of urban black Atlanta and Charlotte. They are also part of the South that you condemn. The fact that Atlanta was a railroad hub for the South, and oh yeah, Ted Turner, umm a white boy, and umm Coca-cola, a southern company headquartered in ATL, and the Atlanta airport had more to do with their growth than an attitude of openness toward all people. IE, they had jobs to offer.

For all the racism you point out, southern whites and blacks, interpersonally, probably get along better here than anywhere else in the country, especially up north. Integration has been a fact here before it was up north, as you well know. Nowadays, blacks hold good jobs all over the South, not just Atlanta and Charlotte. Maybe on average southerners are paid less than northerners. But when it is time to retire, why don’t you stay up there? Could it be quality of life issues?

To blame a whole region for ignorance and intolerance of some is not fair to all Southerners. One moron starting a basketball team which would be at best a joke, and a few people from wherever defending him, is not a reason to continue to slam a region. I thought it was called the United States, and if you are a military guy as you claim, you should have fought for the whole country, and if you never lived here, then don’t begin to try to explain it to us.

You can have your opinions about how great your area is, and we can have ours. Personally, just because you live in a large metro area doesn’t necessarily make you more civilized or have a better standard of living. Peace and quiet and low crime have their pluses. Also, plenty of white and black tax payers down here pay their taxes including recently bailing out Detroit.
