Flaws derail global warming letter

  • Follow Letters

David Brown's advice in his recent letter ("Don't fall for the global warming hoax," Dec. 31) -- to write to our members of Congress and demand that they oppose global warming legislation because of the recent e-mail controversy -- was flawed in two key ways:

First, an investigation by the Associated Press revealed that the supposedly incriminating statements from the stolen e-mails were in fact taken hugely out of context, and that a serious examination of the entirety of the e-mails only affirms the consensus of thousands of scientists worldwide that anthropogenic climate change poses a massive ecological threat.

Those who continue to study the science almost unanimously agree that climate change will lead to widespread environmental destruction, human displacement and property damage, and have other serious ecological and socioeconomic ramifications.

Second, Mr. Brown ignores the plain fact that even if global climate change is somehow not the threat that scientists know it to be, the measures that would be taken in legislation seeking to counter it are in fact beneficial environmental policies regardless. Even if climate change is not occurring, pollution should still be limited.

Even if global warming doesn't pose a threat, our society needs alternative energy ever more desperately. Thus, even if scientists are somehow wrong in their consensus, America will benefit anyway from the environmental measures that arise from this issue.

Matt Shafer, Augusta

Mr Shafer, I'd just like to

Mr Shafer, I'd just like to leave a comment so you know that at least one person read your LTE. I thank you for the early morning chuckles. I'll put on the Kermit the Frog theme music "It's not that easy being green...." and read it again later when I need cheering up. Thank you! (yes, my smarmy comment included just as many "facts" as your letter)

Great letter, most of the

Great letter, most of the people who deny global warming think only about the weather, not the climate. Just because its been cold for past couple of weeks does not mean the ocean isn't warming, or that the ozone layer isn't extremely thin. Even the pentagon has started briefings in case of "human displacement." Unfortunately, saving the enviroment has become a political issue. Right wing denies it, and the left wing seems to believe....Climatologist, James Hansen of NASA is one of the best at explaining global warming. Scientific Data> Politics

I'm with you Matt!!!! Smaller

I'm with you Matt!!!! Smaller is larger, more government is good and global cooling is caused by global warming. The AP is a reliable source of information and God is dead. Oh yeah, the facts of the e-mails were printed in their entirety and aren't open to interpretation. Of course, you and I are going with the AP (can you say leftist) version. Don't you just love government schools?

Believe (1) earth is getting

Believe (1) earth is getting warmer, (2) harm caused by this is greater than benefits (there are some) of it, (3) man can reverse this, and (4) cost of doing (3) is less than effect of (2). None are proven or even likely, and (4) is incredibly expensive. You have to be a great fool to fall for any of this when no one knows the weather 30 days from now. Global warming fools are watermelons - green on the outside, red (socialist) on the inside, just want to seize control of the world's economy. Not fooling me.

Matt, considering the bitter cold temperatures we've all had to deal with lately, I'd welcome a little global warming right now. DEERHUNTER, when you and the other global warming alarmists can tell me some REAL qualifications that idiot Al Gore has to be preaching to us about global warming, then I'll listen. His 10,000 square foot home in Nashville tells me he's not that concerned about global warming. Typical liberal hypocrites...do as I say, not as I do.

Professor Mojib Latif, one of

Professor Mojib Latif, one of the world's leading climate modelers says we're in for 30 years of cooler temperatures -- a mini ice age, he calls it, basing his theory on an analysis of natural cycles in water temperatures in the world's oceans.
Latif, is a professor at the Leibniz Institute at Germany's Kiel University and an author of the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report. Isn't it funny that even one of their own has said we are going through a COOLING CYCLE.

NEEDS Alternative energy Mr.

NEEDS Alternative energy Mr. Shafer? ANWR has more than enough oil to last the US for decades if allowed to drill. And to say it would ruin wildlife in the area is preposterous. If you look around any other land based drilling site in Alaska you see abundant wildlife.

The appalling thing is the complete ignorance of the people who think global warming isn't real and isn't caused by human action. It is obvious that not one of you has gone to the library to read articles by anyone who is actually qualified, instead preferring to listen to the fools on talk radio.

Air is a mixture of gases -

Air is a mixture of gases - 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen - with traces of water vapor, carbon dioxide, argon, and various other components. TRACES !! Carbon dioxide makes up only .03%. Not 3%, but .03%. The atmosphere is 10 miles thick. There is no way that you will ever convince me that CO2 is EVER going to make a difference no matter how much or how loud you say it. I have said it before. A tree, the grass, the weeds, the algae, and the flowers are only here because of that trace amount of carbon dioxide that is in the air. When you see a forest of trees, you are looking at the carbon that comes from that little bit of CO2 that is floating around. Global warming is caused by the sun and a wobbling earth, not you or me.

A quote from Mr. Latif:

"If my name was not Mojib Latif, my name would be global warming. So I really believe in Global Warming. Okay. However, you know, we have to accept that there are these natural fluctuations, and therefore, the temperature may not show additional warming temporarily."

So what Mr. Latif really believes is that global warming is temporarily being hid by natural fluctuations. Just keeping you honest, overburdened. Source is below.

Does the guy who founded the weather channel qualify, does the French scientist (Allegre) who has changed postions qualify (www.prisonplanet.com/archives/global_warming/index.htm ), do any of the 17,000 PHD's who dispute global warming qualify (www.digitaljournal.com/.../17_200_Scientists_Dispute_Global_Warming)? It is really interesting read articles that show there is NO correlation between temperature and CO2..but the ignorant continue to want to believe..we are going to have a court case soon that may stettle the matter, the beef producers are sueing the EPA and the EPA will have to prove CO2 and other green house gasses are dangerous!

deekster on Mon Jan 18, 2010 10:29 AM Climate change is real and has been happening for millenia with or with out mankind, at one point Greenland was green, then we had the mini ice age 1150 to 1460 and another cold period that lead to famines in the Europe between 1560 and 1860. The world has climate change continually, man has as much to do with it as the ants do with the sprinkler system in my back yard..

Overburdened - Climate and

Overburdened - Climate and weather are two different things. Weather describes the day-to-day temperature and conditions, while climate is a more of an average of normal conditions. For instance, a climatologist would describe the US as a temperate zone. The argument is that GW will shift the worlds temperate zones further north and south. Saying it will be warmer in the future is very different than saying it will rain on June 16, 2026. And I don't necessarily think the scientists are "100% correct/" They are a lot of different models and predictions out there, some only predict a couple degree rise, some a 10 or more degree rise. These different predictions are based on the "natural variations" that Latif and yourself have spoken about.

What you bleeding heart Liberals don't understand is the money involved with the global warming lies. Don't you idiots understand that it's all about the United States fronting all the money to support this hoax. You Liberals would probably agree with Hugo Chavez that the United States should pay his and other countries for R&D into climate change. Just what we need to do is pay Chavez!!!!!!!! Geez

Climategate Forecast...
'What is the current scientific consensus on the conclusions reached by Drs. Mann, Bradley and Hughes? [Referring to the hockey stick propagated in UN IPCC 2001 by Michael Mann and debunked by McKintyre and McKittrick in 2005.]

Ans: Based on the literature we have reviewed, there is no overarching consensus on MBH98/99. As analyzed in our social network, there is a tightly knit group of individuals who passionately believe in their thesis. However, our perception is that this group has a self-reinforcing feedback mechanism and, moreover, the work has been sufficiently politicized that they can hardly reassess their public positions without losing credibility.'

AD HOC COMMITTEE REPORT ON THE 'HOCKEY STICK' GLOBAL CLIMATE RECONSTRUCTION, also known as The Wegman report was authored by Edward J. Wegman, George Mason University, David W. Scott, Rice University, and Yasmin H. Said, The Johns Hopkins University with the contributions of John T. Rigsby, III, Naval Surface Warfare Center, and Denise M. Reeves, MITRE Corporation.

"If we regard the fulfilment of our purpose as contingent upon any circumstances, past, present or future, we are not making use of first cause, we have descended to the level of secondary causation, which is the region of doubts, fears and limitations, all of which we are impressing upon the universal subjective mind, with the inevitable result that it will build up corresponding external conditions."
