The president has been under fire for saying America is no longer a Christian nation. It was with great distress I found myself inclined to agree.
Then it hit me. America was indeed founded as a Christian nation, and it's time to re-establish ourselves as such!
This quote often is misattributed to Patrick Henry, but it actually is from the April 1956 issue of The Virginian magazine: "It cannot be emphasized too clearly and too often that this nation was founded not by 'religionists' but by Christians -- not on religion, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ ."
Today, we take Christ out of Christmas and the death and resurrection of our Lord from Easter; don't pray in our schools, and don't carry Bibles either; remove the Ten Commandments from our courthouses; and accept radical behavior as freedom of religion and pornography as freedom of expression.
And we kill the unborn and applaud ourselves for giving a mother the "right to choose" to end her child's life. Let's enforce a government-run health-care program that will require us to not only pay for that mother's "right to choose" but also, ultimately, lead to the denial of medical care to, and the premature death of our seniors.
That doesn't sound very Christian to me.
"Woe to them that call evil good, and good evil ... ," Isaiah 5:20. That's us, America, and we'd best heed the warning.
In 1863, Abraham Lincoln wrote that it is a duty "to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord."
How can we expect God to continue blessing this nation when we continually defy Him and His laws? For God to bless us, we must return to the Christian principles on which this country was founded and we must bless God!

Emerydan, please let me extend your sobriquet for the AC; how about the Augusta Christian Chronic. GGpap
Gail V, by your reasoning one could assume that because some Haitians practiced Voodoo; God finally blessed them with his "loving" wrath yesterday. Please save me from God's blessings, Gail; he seems to enjoy dishing out horrific "tough love" for his children. GGpap
This nation should serve its people, and there are a lot of people here who are not Christian. It is true that this country was partially founded by people fleeing religious persecution. Let's learn from their example and realize that the answer is not to create another country where people feel they need to flee a fanatical Christian majority in order to have their own freedom of religion. Can't we all just get along? Why does it have to be your way or the highway?
I'd sure like to live in a theocracy...not!
AMEN!!! Very well said. It's people like you a that give me hope. Don't listen to what everyone says on here. It's typical for this kind of reaction from 'the world'. We know whats right, though, and all we can do is say what we have to say and pray. Let God do the rest! God bless you for speaking out and not being ashamed! Many 'Christians' would not do what you just did and speak the REAL truth! I applaud you! Great job!
Gail, while this country was founded on the principles of the Judeo-Christian religion, it was also founded on the concept that a theocracy was to be avoided. When it was commanded to "render unto Cesar ..." it wasn't just about yielding to governments, but also about allowing each to find their own path. For some, Christianity is the answer, but as you can see, anti-Christianity is also important to many. The laws of this land are the common ground that we all need to recognize.
I agree with Gail. Thanks for the letter. Truth usually strikes fear into many.
this nation will continue to decline in anything good. on the dollar bill it says 'in God we trust.' that needs to be done away with. that is a lie. I pray that on the day that some catastrophic thing happens, it will get the attention of many. that many will 'truly' repent.
yes my comment is harsh. but it's the truth.
Damn, I am stunned; I must agree with JS's most rational and intelligent post---EVER!. Good job, johnston cliff/aka PT. GGpap
A very good message Gail, one all need to hear and come to the reality that "we" are not God, but that HE is God.
John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
To GGpap and BaronvonWrong: You all are among the most vocal opponents of all things Christians that I read here. We must endure your constant rants that Christians are murderers, rapists, and genocidal maniacs, and how the world would be so much better off if Christianity never was. Well, I find it very ironic reading about the tragedy in Haiti, and how Christian missionaries are there, paying their own way, and doing all they can to help. What is notable is that I see no ACLU-sponsored relief efforts. No American Atheists folks are there trying to provide humanitarian aid, are they? It's the CHRISTIANS that were there before and after the quake serving the people and helping. Here's just another benefit of Christianity to humanity, done by those "murdering, raping, genocidal Christians". Would you care to say how these terrible Christians should be silenced and kicked out of Haiti?
Another ignorant letter writer. This country was never founded as a Christian country. Christianity is in none of the founding documents of this nation.
Many, but not all of the country's founders were religious men in one sense or another, but the US was never founded as a Christian nation. We have a secular government to which people of any religion are welcome. This letter does not represent the principles of freedom and equality on which our great nation was founded.
To grouse: Yeah, but GOD IS! And Jesus is God. Simple, yet so hard for people like you to understand. Instead, you make excuses not to act right and follow the rules.
BTW, the earliest and most vocal advocates of separating church and state at our country's origins were the Baptists and the Quakers--Christians who, at that time, recognized the great truth that church should be forever independent of the awesome and ultimately corrupting power of government.
Lorissa, please be aware that Jews, Deists, Hindus, and many other people also believe in God.
howcanyouknow, how can YOU know that there are no atheists lending aid to the victims in Haiti? To my knowledge atheists do not generally advertise their good deeds; doing the deed is enough reward for the doer. Perhaps other folks could take this as a lesson in good "christian" behavior. By the way, since you ignore my questions posed on another string (1/9/10), perhaps you'd care to address them now: 1) You wrote "Unless Jesus is a liar," and I ask you, if not, how do you explain Mathew 16:27-28, Mathew 24:34, and Luke 21:32? 2) Your point here, that "The god of Islam is not the God of Christianity. Buddhism has no god at all. Hinduism has 1000's of gods. They can't all be right" seems to indicate to me that no matter the choice, there MUST be a "god." Why? And, finally, 3) "Christians do worship Christ as God incarnate," and why again? Just because a mortal walked this earth over 200 years ago, told a few gullible "roadies" that he was the "son of god" and they, in turn, as mortals, continued to spread the rumor that you believe yet today?
GGpap, you didn't answer my question, but that's OK. Obviously, you don't know of any atheist-sponsored relief either. Here's an issue: You're an atheist so I assume you subscribe to Darwinian evolutionary naturalism, right? If so, then why do atheists provide humanitarian aid? I mean, should a resource-consuming impoverished land like Haiti be allowed to die? The consume valuable resources, add to global warming, but contributed nothing to our continued progress of human evolution. If we're all here because of natural selection, why not let it work and cull out those that we hindering our progress? I submit that your logic is highly self-refuting. In fact, by supporting the idea of humanitarian aid to the unfortunate, you are violating the very principles you stand for (naturalistic evolution), and are in fact endorsing the Christian principles of aiding the least of us. Where does your definition of "good" come from? It must be the Bible, because it clearly is not from evolution. I'd be interested in hearing your explanation for your inconsistencies.

Once again - so many "christians", not enough lions.
Wow. So much hate on here. Too bad I got a life and I don't have time to be listening to all this babble about God- who's God?, why does this say this?, bla bla bla. Gail, if you are reading: Don't be listening to all of this nonsense. Don't get discouraged. You had the priviledge to announce your beliefs in a letter to the public and you did a great job! Everybody knows what God the money is referring to. Maybe we shouldn't have started to put God in the government. I don't really know what the Bible says about that, but at least they tried. If I were in government, I would have done the same thing. More of God, the better the world will be and for all of you fools: IF IT WEREN'T FOR GOD- YOU, YES YOU, WOULD NOT EXIST! Believe it or not, it's the TRUTH! May God reveal Himself to everyone on here and to all the people in the world, just like you, that have never felt God's love and power. And for GGPAP- I'm praying for you. You got some serious hate issues that you need to work on.
Howdoyouknow, you write "Obviously, you don't know of any atheist-sponsored relief either." Obviously, you're reading comprehension is a problem. I repeat, atheists do not advertise their good deeds; and they certainly don't clear their good deeds with me for my approval. As for the rest of your (?), I submit that atheists have morals, compassion and common sense no matter whether they subscribe to a Darwinist theory of evolution or not; and certainly not to SOCIAL Darwinism where the plight of Haitians is concerned. Atheists simply do not subscribe to a belief in tooth fairies, easter bunnies, abominable snowmen, false prophets, or blind narrow minded diarrhea that is constantly released on the threads of public opinion columns. GGpap
thank you Gail for proving how much of an ignorant , brainwashed , prostletyzer you are !!!!!!!!! And Lorissa - you are 10x worse !!!! For you morons to believe that there is a supernatural power which controls events on this planet is absolutely pathetic - you live in a fantasy world - and I am constantly irritated when you claim anything in the bible can be proven as fact - IT CAN'T !!!!! That's why you deflect atheist statements with idiotic replies that make no sense . Ex.- howcanweknow - Atheists providing aid contradicts the natural selection process - we are a species that enjoy the freewill to choose to do what we want , it is completely false to attribute humanitarian aid as a "christian" principle - it is a HUMAN trait to be giving , you don't have to belive in a religion in order to help other humans - GET A FREAKIN GRIP ON REALITY !!
Excellent letter Gail and 100% true. Not only were 95% of the founders Christian; the declaration of independence was mostly taken from sermons that had been given. Most of the fighters in the war for our freedom were pastors and their congregations. The British were always looking for the pastors because they knew that were at the core of the fight for freedom. For Christians who don't realize just how strong a Christian base this country has check out David Barton's web site and his info. Almost every good thing ever done in this country was started by a Christian. Christian brothers and sisters be bold and proud of what God has done for this country and speak the name of Jesus often and watch the demons tremble in the non-believers around you. It is the name of Jesus that upsets folks because the power living in the non-believer knows the name of Jesus is stronger. Enjoy your Christianity and know you are always on the winning side and bless those in darkness around you.
Gap...Christian don't believe in those things either, but they do believe in Jesus Christ. (That is why they are called "Christians, if you don't agree, then skip over to another subject. Lots of topics on here.
SOLDOUT - you are insiniuating that if I do not believe in jesus , I am posessed by a demon and I live in darkness ???? For you especially , I will repeat the closing on my last post - GET A FREAKIN GRIP ON REALITY !!!!!!!
GGpap, you're an expert in avoidance behavior. I asked you where an atheist gets their morals? If we're all just passengers on a natural selection-sponsored voyage to human perfection, why help the less fortunate? There is no naturalistic justification for that. I see only a CHRISTIAN justification (because love, compassion, and offering aid is commanded by the Bible -- the very book you condemn). It is NOT a human trait to be giving. Humans are born selfish, and we pretty much stay that way. Self-preservation is a human trait, not self-denial. So again, I ask the same heretofore unanswered question: Why do naturalistic, evolutionary atheists bother to help the "less fortunate"? That refutes the very principles they demand we believe "created" us and that humanity must adhere to. It is Christianity that promotes helping the unfortunate, not natural selection. See, atheists are caught in their own illogical conundrum when they practice Christian principles, while simultaneously saying that Christianity is a disease that needs to be wiped out. You can't have it both ways. If you want to be a true atheist, then where does your definition of "good" come from?
A country that attempts to govern itself from a holy book will immediately find itself in decline: the talents of its females repressed and squandered and its qualified and educated people in exile or in prison.
