Warrant issued for mother of often-injured baby

  • Follow Metro

An Augusta woman was indicted this week after authorities found her 1-year-old daughter had suffered a string of serious injuries that kept her in and out of the hospital from the day she was born.

The indictment alleges Evita Butler, 26, of the 1000 block of Amli Way, committed second-degree cruelty to children by not providing a safe and healthy living environment for her child.

Between July 18, 2008, and Sept. 1, 2009, the baby suffered fractures to her forearm, three ribs, a tibia, a fibula, had bleeding from both eyes, bleeding on the brain, a lacerated liver and internal bleeding in the abdomen.

Thelma Gilchrist, an investigator with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office who worked the case, said the girl was initially taken to a hospital for a broken leg. A few weeks later, they returned to the hospital for compression to the child's toes, which the mother blamed on the cast being too tight.

About a week after that, the child was returned to the hospital with a burn to her arm. The mother said the burn occurred while the child was being cared for by her father, Investigator Gilchrist said.

Authorities have been unable to locate the father but they think that all the incidents, aside from the burn, happened while the girl was being cared for by her mother.

The Richmond County Superior Court case is assigned to Chief Judge J. Carlisle Overstreet and an outstanding grand jury warrant has been issued for her arrest.

It took all those injuries

It took all those injuries over a period of a little over a year to raise a red flag? And the warrant for her arrest is only based on "second-degree cruelty to children by not providing a safe and healthy living environment for her child"? What's up with this?

If the parents don't protect

If the parents don't protect the babies and keep them from harm, there's little done to save the babies. This is another horrible Byzantine story. There are way too many of these.

According to a cursory

According to a cursory search, she is a 2002 graduate of Laney and has no prior convictions. J Carlisle will probably let her walk with counseling and probation under the first offender act. That is my prediction.

1941, once again. Okay, murder the child so it has no chance of ever finding a loving home. Are you still mad at your mother for allowing you to be born?

corgimom - And I'll be happy

corgimom - And I'll be happy to assist you. Then we'll blow both knees, and let her scream for awhile more. Then take her out to the swamp and leave her there. My guess is she is an unemployed, generational welfare, worthless single female. If Overstreet has any man balls whatsoever, he'll throw into a deep dark hole. Her family should be so ashamed. A piece of human excrement.

Is someone colored blind not to see the red flags!!! How does a 1 year old suffer all these fractures and someone doesn't find that odd? Whether this woman gets off light with the first offender act or not, this child definitely does not to be in this woman's care (EVER AGAIN)

I think sterlization is in order. This woman should never be allowed to have any more children. She is obviously unstable.

This is a failure of the

This is a failure of the child welfare system. These injuries should not have gone unreported because all healthcare professionals are mandatory reporters for abuse to minors, disabled, elderly and dependant adults. But it doesn't surprise me since I know of at least one case where University Hospital could not locate a mother who had given birth when nurses went to look for her. When found she said that she had went out to smoke and then went to the restroom. After she had been discharged from the hospital, I found out from one of her former friends that she had gone off campus to get drugs, brought them back to the hospital and had the baby beside the tray table she was using to snort cocaine. I wish that these hospitals would give a full blood tests to all mothers to ensure their clean bill of health before discharge and to make sure that drug abuse doesn't slip through the cracks. Moreover, if their is an "open case" or other children in the family that are in care, the newborn should be placed immediately in the care of the state until reunification or termination of parentatl rights. Repeated traumatic brain injury is serious. We need to pray for this baby's healing.

scoobynews - Are you nuts, or have you been drinking the kool-aid? Punishment in the same fashion that she gave her daughter, and death, is what is in order. A slow and painful one. Read corgimom and my post right below it. And as I said before, Overstreet had better grow some man balls.

This woman probably is exercising Munchausen by Proxy, almost the ultimate in narcissism as a personality defect. She needs to be dropped on an island without ferry service somewhere.

of course when caught she

of course when caught she will claim drug addiction/alcoholism want to go into rehab place her child with an "enabling" for a while then petition the court to get her child back, what should be done is have her tubes "cut, burned and tied and her uterus and wob removed and buried 1000 feet under ground to rot and decay" her kneecaps broken punched in the head and face 500 times and put UNDER THE jail for about 25 years

Dropping her on an island would be just as good without all the blood lust. Stop and think about how vile your comments are guys. Some of this is just way over the top, and I'm surprised they haven't been pulled.

I have to agree with you,

I have to agree with you, AnotherLook, that this was a situation that should have been sending up red flags every time she got any medical care. Unless this baby has a diagnosis of something like osteogenesis imperfecta, the second time she had to be x-rayed automatically should have led to a DFCS report and investigation. It probably should have happened with the first x-ray because new born babies just don't get broken bones without something really bad happening to them, by accident or otherwise.

All of the injuries were

All of the injuries were classic signs of shaken baby syndrome. The hospitals have a nasty habit of not reporting alleged abuse and Richmond Co. DFCS is so understaffed that it may have fallen through the cracks once, but with the number of times this has happened, it is inexcusable.

Another consideration is that

Another consideration is that we are not told what type of fractiures occured. In some cases a specific type of fracture can only occur when there has been a wrenching or twisting action applied to the bone itself. This type of fracture is a sprial fracture and is one of the primary indicators of abuse. Unfortunately the article doesn't say, but we know that the baby wasn't playing hockey or soccer when all of this repeatedly occured! Given the severity and number of injuries, this 'mother' should not be reunited with her baby. I would also question ithe safety of the baby if there was a relative placement since some family members will give the abusers open access to the child without any restrictions or limitations regardless of what has been ordered by the court. Unfortunately, we seem to be hearing about such egregious and reprehensible behaviour more frequently everyday.

There are more guilty persons

There are more guilty persons here than the sorry excuse for a human being that gave birth to this child. Children need to be watched after by all of us. If we see something like this it is our responsibility to make authorities aware. Why didn't it get reported sooner? God Bless that innocent baby!

A baby gets a lacerated liver

A baby gets a lacerated liver or abdominal bleeding by being kicked or suffering a heavy, forceful blow- like being punched.

I think it is time to get back to basics. It takes a village to raise a child I guess might be right. She should be stoned, maybe not to death, but still. Maybe stoned enough to cause a broken forearm, three broken ribs, a tibia, a fibula, etc....
