AUGUSTA, Ga. - Henry Leon Schlifka, 87, beloved husband of Bernice Schlifka, entered into rest on Friday, January 1, 2010 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Monday, January 4, 2010 in the Telfair St. Chapel of Elliott Sons Funeral Home with Rabbi Robert Klensin officiating. Burial will follow in Westover Memorial Park. Mr. Schlifka was preceded in death by his first wife Giselle Schlifka and three sisters, Marie Rousseau, Germaine Quatrevaux and Charlotte Schlifka. Mr. Schlifka was born in Paris, France in 1922. He joined the French Army at 16 thus avoiding capture by the Gestapo. While serving in North Africa under the command of General Charles De Gaulle he was wounded in action and received the La Croix de Guerre, one of Frances most prestigious awards for gallantry. After the war he married his first wife Giselle and their only son Patrick was born in 1947. In 1953 the family was sponsored by his sister and brother-in-law, Jacqueline and Arthur Miller and migrated to the United States, settling in New York City. Henry utilized his natural woodworking talents rising from carpenter to plant superintendent and traveled overseeing installations in large department stores in the United States and Canada. Henry and Giselle moved to Augusta in the mid 90's and after Giselle passed away in 1997 Henry met Bernice Jolles and remarried in 2001. He was fortunate to have found two loving and caring women in one lifetime. Henry was very talented and charming. He sang in his synagogue as a child and was active in the Congregation Children of Israel Choir and High Holy Day Choir. He could not read music but played the harmonica by ear superbly. He loved to dance and taught ballroom dancing; played bridge exceptionally well, was fluent in many languages, active in Senior Olympics and often amused friends with his stories of personal experiences and travels. He will be truly missed by his family and friends. In addition to his loving wife Bernice he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Gail Schlifka, Kansas City, Missouri; stepsons and daughters-in-law, Nathan and Lauren Jolles, Augusta, Dr. Alan and Shannon Jolles, Orangeburg, South Carolina, Steven Jolles, Evans; grandchildren, Dr. Brett (Melissa) Schlifka, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dr. Tara Amie (Scott) Clark, Kansas City, Missouri, Ryan Ian (Meghan) Schlifka, Evans; six great grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Jacqueline and Arthur Miller, Evans and several nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Children of Israel Friends of Temple Music Fund or the Ralph Abramovitz Youth Fund, 3005 Walton Way, Augusta, Georgia 30909.
