AUGUSTA, Ga. - Ben Swain McElmurray, Jr, 73, entered into rest on Saturday, January 2, 2010 at his residence. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 PM Monday, January 4, 2010 at Westover Memorial Park with his son, Rev. Christopher Matthew McElmurray officiating. Dr. Glen Owen, Jr., Jesse Owen, Andrew Magruder, Joe Kirkpatrick, Will Barrett, Jr. and Russell Barrett will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Augusta Golf Association and the Augusta Bar Association. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben Swain and Lillian Lansdell McElmurray, Sr. and his sister, Ruth McElmurray Owen. Mr. McElmurray was a native of Augusta graduating from Richmond Academy and then receiving his undergraduate and law degrees from The University of Georgia. During his time at UGA he was active in and a member of several organizations including graduating Phi Beta Kappa, Number I of Kappa Alpha Order, Blue Key Honor Society, Greek Horsemen Honor Society, Cadet Commander of ROTC, Gridiron Society, Sphinx Honor Society and was the Editor in Chief of the 1958 Pandora. Upon his return to Augusta he practiced law for over 45 years and as was typical was very involved in the community. He was a member of the Augusta Bar Association, Augusta Golf Association, AMBUCS, Beech Island Agricultural Club, Hephzibah Agricultural Club, Augusta Country Club, Augusta Historical Society and was a Past Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge #205. He was affectionately known to his family and friends as "Loophole" and will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Cheesman McElmurray; children, Jayne McElmurray Kirkpatrick, Augusta, Ben Swain (Cyndy) McElmurray, III, Augusta, Joseph Lansdell (Diana) McElmurray, Grovetown, Rev. Christopher Matthew (Melisa) McElmurray, Senoia, Georgia; stepchildren, Guy Robertson, San Francisco, Denise Wright, Augusta, Janet (Ted) Martin, Columbia, Missouri; ten grandchildren, Joe, Paddy and Kate Kirkpatrick, Joe McElmurray, Jr., Abigail, Rachel and Finley McElmurray, Mark Wright, Jr., Natalie and Ashley Martin and several nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to Hale House Foundation, 402 Walker St., Augusta, Georgia 30901.
