- Four Tennessee basketball players, including starting senior forward Tyler Smith , are facing felony gun and misdemeanor drug charges.

The Knoxville Police Department says the 23-year-old Smith, 22-year-old junior point guard Melvin Goins , 22-year-old junior center Brian Williams and 21-year-old sophomore guard Cameron Tatum were arrested during a Friday morning traffic stop near Tennessee's campus.

According to a police report, officers smelled marijuana coming from the car and found a handgun with an altered serial number, a bag of marijuana and an open container of alcohol. Tatum was driving.

Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl said in a statement that the team takes such matters seriously. Pearl says officials are still gathering information from authorities.

Top-ranked Federer loses in semifinals

In Abu Dhabi, United Emirates, Roger Federer lost and Rafael Nadal won in the semifinals of the season-opening Capitala exhibition tournament.

Nadal beat Spanish Davis Cup teammate David Ferrer 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 to secure a place in the final against Robin Soderling , who earlier dispatched the top-ranked Federer 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-1), 6-2.

- In Perth, Australia, Lleyton Hewitt says he is injury-free and ready to continue his move up the rankings as he prepares to play for Australia at the Hopman Cup beginning today.

"I've been doing the hard yards on and off the practice court," Hewitt said. "I feel as fit as I've ever been and I feel as strong as I've ever been and I'm hitting the ball well at the moment."

Hewitt will partner with Sam Stosur at the Hopman Cup mixed teams event, with top-seeded Australia taking on Romania's Sorana Cirstea and Victor Hanescu in the first group match today.

Snowboarder is still in critical condition

American snowboarder Kevin Pearce was in critical condition at a Utah hospital Friday after suffering a head injury while training in Park City, Utah, his publicist said.

Pearce's condition at University of Utah hospital in Salt Lake City hasn't changed since undergoing surgery Thursday, Danielle Burch said.

Pearce, a top-ranked halfpipe rider with a good chance of making the U.S. Olympic team, was knocked unconscious when he hit his head during a training run on Thursday.

- In Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, Gregor Schlierenzauer won the second stop of the Four-Hill ski jumping Tour by beating Austrian teammate Wolfgang Loitzl .

Schlierenzauer earned his 27th World Cup win, scoring 277.7 points on jumps of 136.5 meters and 137.5 meters. Loitzl, last year's tour winner, had 277.5 points after jumps of 135 meters.

- In Oberhof, Germany, World Cup leader Petter Northug, of Norway, won the 3.7-kilometer prologue of the Tour de Ski, and Petra Majdic, of Slovenia, took the women's 2.8-kilometer race.

Northug crossed the line in 7 minutes, 37.4 seconds. Marcus Hellner, of Sweden, was next in 7:38.2 and Axel Teichmann, of Germany, last season's winner of the event, took third place in 7:39.4.
