Joe Nichols will take Pure Country to Broadway when he plays a burned-out country singer.

Mr. Nichols (Brokenheartsville, Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off ), will portray burned-out country superstar Dusty Chandler, played by Mr. Strait in the movie.

Grand Ole Opry star Lorrie Morgan will play Mr. Nichols' love interest, Harley Tucker.

"We'll hit Broadway next fall," Mr. Nichols said backstage at the WKXC-FM Guitar Pull in November. "I'll be Rusty, though, rather than Dusty. Warner Bros. Pictures owns the franchise for Dusty, so the Broadway company creating the show had to make a minor adjustment."

The soundtrack of the movie Pure Country is Mr. Strait's most commercially successful release, having sold more than 6 million copies.

It spawned his No. 1 hits I Cross My Heart and Heartland, The King of Broken Hearts (later recorded by Mark Chesnutt and Lee Ann Womack) and Where the Sidewalk Ends .

Mr. Nichols said the Broadway version will feature songs from the movie as well as new songs by Steve Dorff, John Bettis (who co-wrote Heartland ) and Rex McGee.

"Oh, yeah, this is strictly a musical made for Broadway," Mr. Nichols said. "I think there will be 17 or 18 songs with lots of scenes and will last about an hour and 45 minutes. It's going to be a good time."
