Sometimes a trip is all about the meal, a restaurant or joint with food so good or a dining experience so unusual that you're willing to spend a few hours cramped in a car to get there. There are several such locations within a one-tank drive of Augusta.
Here is one of our favorites to start things off:
THE DILLARD HOUSE
WHERE: 768 Franklin St., Dillard, Ga.
WHAT: Family-style seating and all-you-can-eat servings. It's a spot worth driving to for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The ultimate in Southern comfort food, it will fuel you up for a hike in the north Georgia mountains -- if you're able to move again after being so stuffed.
GETTING THERE: Take Interstate 20 west to Thomson, then Georgia Highway 17 north to U.S. Highway 441, and proceed north to Dillard.
