"We visited probably twice, and even then it was just driving through," said Mrs. Berg.

The Bergs moved from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to retire in South Carolina.

They picked Lakes and Streams, a large subdivision just outside the North Augusta city limits. True to its name, the neighborhood features a large lake and several ponds, as well as fountains and public walking trails.

"We love being outside," Mrs. Berg said. "Our yard is like a park."

Their house is one of the neighborhood's more modest homes, and yet still features 18-foot ceilings and a large yard, in which the couple gardens. They have trees that produce figs, pomegranates and peaches.

The home brings nature indoors, with flower prints in the kitchen and soft greens in the master bedroom. The guest rooms and hall highlight family photos.

"We're average folks," Mrs. Berg said. "It's small enough and large enough."

Mr. Berg agreed. "We're so close to everything. It's safe, quiet and convenient, especially with I-520 opening up. Who could ask for more?"
