Mother, son face uncertain future

With her workplace company closing, a single mother in Augusta worries about the future and Christmas for her 4-year-old son.

To handle her uncertain future, she is "saving all my money and paying my bills ahead of time," she writes. "But I would like to see my son smile, knowing he's getting something for Christmas."

"Any assistance that could be given my son and me would be so appreciated," she writes. "May God bless you all for this opportunity."

The Augusta Chronicle Empty Stocking Fund has helped people facing such challenges for 79 years.

Last year, the charity raised a record-breaking $124,000 that helped children and families across the region.

I have yet to figure out why these stories appear every year around this time, why now? What was going on prior with these individuals, could this have been a story in June, July or another month, could they have gotten help in any other month?

We'll be pondering that for quite a while...."Notreally"!!! What a question!!

Although I commend this mother for saving her money and paying her bills ahead of time, this child is only 4 years old and a trip to the dollar store or the GoodWill store could warrant a simple but nice Christmas for him. I feel for this mother but a child this young, it doesn't take much to impress them and $20 can go a long way at the $ Store or Goodwill.

More people having children they can't afford and looking for handouts from others.

I agree totally with InChristLove.

You don't have to go out and buy your child a playstation & games, or a WII.
Go to the dollar store, get alot of toys for cheap and this will make the 4 year old just as happy.
Heck, I have worries this time of year myself but I don't have the money to save up to pay my bills in advance. Join the crowd of the real world and do what you can on your own.

Children like simple toys better than fancy expensive ones.

Go to the back of a store and get a box then paint it with your child on Christmas morning.
