Society in the sewer

It's often said this country is fighting two wars simultaneously in which it's important to win the hearts and minds of the civilian population.

But there's a third battle on -- for the hearts and minds of the American population. It's a struggle over what kind of culture, what kind of society, we leave to our kids.

Those of us who pray for an uplifting, upright society -- the kind that built this country and made it the greatest on Earth -- fear we see it slipping away.

That's because there's a faction of society, in vogue with the purveyors of television, movies and music, that constantly seeks to "push the envelope" and shock audiences with ever-more gaudy exhibitions of mankind's basest instincts.

The latest example is American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert's trashy display at the American Music Awards Sunday night on ABC-TV. It featured men on leashes and what appeared to be simulations of oral sex, as well as an open-mouth male-to-male kiss.

We're sure they were proud to have pushed the envelope -- and society further into the sewer. But each time our culture is degraded, our country is degraded.

ABC officials professed to be unaware of some of what was to happen on the show Sunday -- and, indeed, Lambert's Sunday night performance was censored on the West Coast and his morning performance on ABC Wednesday was cancelled. Sadly, CBS was only too happy to invite Lambert over to perform there.

You're not even safe in the public library. The library board in Ames, Iowa, recently voted to reject several hundred petitioners' request to put a sex-education magazine for teens in a less conspicuous place with other periodicals.

The magazine, Sex etc. , published by an advocacy group based at Rutgers University in New Jersey, is a no-holds-barred exploration of sex written by and for teens. It features such things as quizzes on orgasms and oral sex, a comic strip called "I Am Horny" about a frustrated bisexual girl and other gems.

Who needs responsible Iowa adults to get in the way when you've got the fine folks at Rutgers, who claim, in their infinite wisdom, that "teens are responsible decision makers"?

According to the Culture and Media Institute, Sex etc . can inform those "responsible decision makers" "all about laws regarding sex in each state."

Concerned parents in Iowa didn't try to get the magazine banned -- only displayed less prominently for the 12-year-olds and up likely to stumble onto it. But like the folks at Rutgers, the library board in Ames knows more than those backward parents.

It all makes you wonder if concerned parents have a chance in this society anymore.

And let us not forget, that those that speak about their moral values or demonstrate/protest those that refuse to acknowledge their value, are simple minded bigots. Unless of course the demonstrators are Muslim, then that's OK...

Part of the 300 year plan is the moral decay that is embraced and promoted by one of our political parties. It's taught as a form of "diversity". The Hollywood hard left control the entertainment industry and they are, in turn, controlled by the political hard left. It's still up to parents to teach morals to our children and to protect them as long as possible. The homo lifestyle is VERY popular with the hard left and is promoted in entertainment, schools, and some churches. The conservative/responsible movement can never relax their efforts, because the hard left NEVER lets up.

Crazy world today,, can't say merry christmas,,but can have this crap on tv...Will the common sense people please stand up & let's take our country back..

Morals and patriotism are a way of life for me no matter how my neighbor acts or reacts. I must look at myself in the mirror every day and I must like the person I see. Our world had lost this message and we have become a world of "What about me" Everything is for ourselves. When I die and I know I will, I will be alone before my god and only I must stand and face what I have done in life. I can only hope I am worthy! Are you?

Rhetor

The moral decay is real. It extends beyond sexual immorality. Cheating in school has, according to surveys of students, about doubled in the past few decades. Nobody blinks anymore when a politician is caught in a falsehood. At the same time, I have never understood the conservatives' fear of sex education. The horrifying rate of teen pregnancy in the CSRA shows that muzzling sex education doesn't stop kids at all. Apparently some people think, in the face of all reason, that kids won't think about sex unless they are educated about it.

johnston.cliff

Rhetor, morality isn't just about sex, but I think you people know that.

'uplifting society...the kind that built this country" you mean the kind of society that commited genocide against one race and enslaved another, the one that killed 300 plus people at wounded knee, the one that outlawed the languages of the first people's???????????

Just don't go banning something like the X-Mart again....or Ulysses.

Thank you ACLU for all you have done to ruin this country.

Johnston.cliff, my exact point was that morality is more than just sex.

Events that happened 100+ years ago matter in that they are history and should not be repeated; however, this "in your face" moral decay so pervasive in the world today will eventually be the downfall of society. It started long ago - when people started listening to "experts" on child rearing instead of their parents. Parents started abdicating their parental rights to experts. Now the so-called experts have more to say about rearing children than parents, including what children should read and study in school. Children should learn about sex - but it is the parents' right and responsibility to decide when and where the child learns. It is definitely time to take back our country from the far-left and become a more moral society. Everybody will benefit.

This letter hits the nail on the head.

Freebird - what happened to the American Indians and the Blacks who were enslaved is abominable, but not one person is alive who perpetrated those travesties. It also gave you the freedoms to express your thoughts. I work at a prison where see what the moral decay has done to young men. I suggest you, and those like you, stop whining about the past and turn your zeal toward young kids who need guidance and proper role models.

Steel on tgt with this editorial!

Adam Lambert would be the perfect host for the Puke Hall of Fame Awards, as he is a charter inductee.

Great editorial..

Lobosolo

Thank God we've got Mr. Morris and Mr. Ryan and all of their acolytes on this thread to uphold decency. Where, oh where would we all be if it weren't for you paragons of morality!!! Wouldn't America be better off if everyone was like you!!!

Perhaps if there hadn't been such an uproar about Janet Jackson's breast, The poor Chronicle wouldn't have been subjected to simulated gay sex ;) ;).

lobosolo you are a freakin idiot. it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see this country is morally bankrupt.

I have news for the AC, 12 year olds already know about that stuff, unless they are hiding under a rock. The older siblings, older relatives, and friends tell them all about it. You should hear what the 5 year olds tell me. And it's better for teens to read the truth about sex than to learn about it from their stupid friends, who don't know any more about it than they do. Facts are facts, and the truth is the truth. The ones reading that magazine are the ones that are interested and need the information.

A person can be disgusted by the show of moral decay without being taught by anyone. It is an ugly sight to behold....

Notreally

I scanned this article to see if Obama's name was mentioned and to my SHOCK it wasn't. I wonder why, every editorial everyday here seems to fit this headline. I wonder why the writer did say this has happen only since Obama's been president?

dani

Notreally..I would have suggested Clinton rather than Obama...not that any of our politicians can claim the moral high ground.

Despite Freebirds apparent disgust with the early history of this country it cannot be denied that the good old USA went on to become a beacon of hope to millions who saw the value of raising families within it's confines. Indeed, it continues today with hordes of immigrants willing to risk life and limb to get here. That being said....one would have to be blind to not recognize the shocking decline in the culture of our country. Urbanism, gangsterism, thugisms, street gangs, so called music that glorifies beating women, and thumbin' the man proliferate the airwaves and are turning our children into smart allecky uneducated morons. I would suggest that parents take back control of the proper raising of their children, but sadly the current generation of parents is so heavy laden with disciples of the urban culture and accompanying irresponsibility they do not have the intellectural tools to parent properly. It's all on a fast track to the bottom of the human factor. I predict that in another 30 years the United States will be not much more than some third world country devoid of morality and law and order. Doesn't it bring a tear to your eye? America.....destroyed from within
