Empty Stocking Fund begins drive with concert

You can begin today to help bring a brighter Christmas to many in our community through the efforts of The Augusta Chronicle's annual Empty Stocking Fund.

An important source of its fundraising is the annual Empty Stocking Benefit Concert, which will be held 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Augusta, 3500 Walton Way.

It will feature a performance by the Augusta Concert Band, directed by Bob Willing.

Last year, the seasonal charity, begun by the newspaper in 1930, raised a record $124,281.03, which helped many families and individuals during the 2008 holidays.

Applications for help must be returned by Dec. 4.

The newspaper covers the costs of administering the charity so that all donations from individuals, organizations and businesses go directly to those who need it.

Many single parents and caregivers unable to provide medicine and treatment for their children depend on the charity.
