Big men key for Jackets

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico --- A friendly rivalry between teammates Gani Lawal and Derrick Favors means trouble for opponents of No. 21 Georgia Tech.

The two big men each scored 18 points and added three blocks apiece Friday to lead the Yellow Jackets (2-1) to a 70-62 victory over George Mason on Friday in the consolation round of the O'Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

"We push each other to see who can get the most rebounds, score the most points," Favors said. "Me and Gani just try to play hard."

Favors scored six of his points in a 13-0 run, capped by one of his dunks, that gave the Yellow Jackets a 43-23 lead with 15 minutes to play. The Patriots (2-2) got no closer than six points the rest of the way.

No. 2 Michigan StATE 75, Toledo 62

In East Lansing, Mich., Draymond Green had 15 points, and Michigan State (3-0) kept up its home court mastery in a regional matchup in the Legends Classic.

Stephen Albrecht scored 20 points for Toledo (0-3).

NO. 5 VILLANOVA 71, NO. 18 DAYTON 65

In San Juan, Puerto Rico, Corey Fisher scored 18 points to lead Villanova (4-0) past Dayton in the second round of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

Luke Fabrizius led Dayton (2-1) with 16 points and nine rebounds off the bench.

SYRACUSE 87, NO. 6 NORTH CAROLINA 71

In New York, Brandon Triche and Arinze Onuaku combined for 13 points in Syracuse's 22-1 run to open the second half and the Orange went on to a upset North Carolina in the 2K Sports Classic championship.

Tournament MVP Wesley Johnson had 25 points for the Orange.

Ed Davis had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Tar Heels.

NO. 10 TENNESSEE 105, EAST CAROLINA 66

In St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, Scotty Hopson scored 25 points to lead Tennessee in the opening round of the Paradise Jam.

Bobby Maze added 15 points for the Vols (3-0), while Cameron Tatum had 14 and Tyler Smith 13. Melvin Goins finished with 10 points and five assists.

NO. 15 OHIO STATE 76, NO. 13 CALIFORNIA 70

In New York Evan Turner had 26 points and 14 rebounds, his fourth double-double in four games, for Ohio State (3-1) in the 2K Sports Classic third-place game.

Jerome Randle had 26 points for California (2-2).

NO. 15 MICHIGAN 77, HOUSTON BAPTIST 55

In Ann Arbor, Mich., Manny Harris scored 25 points, and DeShawn Sims added 22 to lead Michigan (2-0).

Mario Flaherty scored 17 points, and Andrew Gonzalez had 14 for Houston Baptist (0-4).

NO. 22 CLEMSON 89, NORTH CAROLINA-GREENSBORO 67

In Greensboro, N.C., Trevor Booker scored a season-high 17 points, and Clemson routed North Carolina-Greensboro.

Milton Jennings added 14 points for the Tigers (3-0), Andre Young had 13 and David Potter finished with 11.

Clemson's victory, its 29th in a row in November since 2005, was its closest of the season. Neither of its previous two victories was decided by fewer than 40 points.

NO. 25 MARYLAND 82, NEW HAMPSHIRE 55

In College Park, Md., Landon Milbourne scored a career-high 24 points for Maryland (3-0) in its final tune-up for the Maui Invitational.

Colbey Santos led New Hampshire (1-1) with 14 points.

SOUTH CAROLINA 78, LA SALLE 68

In Charleston, S.C., former Josey standout Dominique Archie scored 17 points to lead a balanced scoring effort as South Carolina cruised in the first round of the Charleston Classic.

The Gamecocks had three other players in double figures, including Brandis Raley-Ross with 16, Mike Holmes with 15 and Devan Downey with 10.

Rodney Green led La Salle with 23.
