Recession means smaller Christmas tree for SC

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The Christmas tree in front of the South Carolina Statehouse has been affected by the recession.

WLTX-TV reports this year's tree is shorter than usual, not even reaching above the monument to Confederate soldiers on the front lawn.

The Columbia Garden Club obtained the tree that arrived Monday, and member Jane Suggs calls it a "recession tree."

The club says it has bought Christmas trees in North Carolina, but this year found a cheaper dealer in Pennsylvania. The shipping caused problems, including broken branches that left bare spots.

The Columbia Garden Club has paid for the tree since 2003 and volunteers decorate it.

The club says South Carolina trees aren't the right shape or size.
