Lady Jags defeated to open the season
In Jefferson City, Tenn., the Augusta State women fell behind by 30 points at the half and lost 100-64 to Carson-Newman in their season opener Wednesday night.
Carson-Newman (2-0) shot 55 percent from the field and forced 41 Augusta State turnovers.
Carson-Newman's Ashley Kyle led all scorers with 20 points.
Blaire Egardo scored 14 for Augusta State. Jarquella Woods , Waneta Carlisle and Stacey Lampkin had 10 each.
- In Anderson, S.C., Hannah DeGraffinreed had 11 points and 10 rebounds as the USC Aiken women opened the season with a 57-48 victory over Anderson.
Catherine Cain also scored 11 points for the Lady Pacers.
- USC Aiken men's basketball coach Vince Alexander has signed 6-foot-10 Dejwan Davis to a national letter of intent.
Davis is averaging 10 points, five rebounds and two blocks per game for Queen City Prep in Charlotte, N.C.
- In Gainesville, Fla., Kenny Boynton had 22 points, Chandler Parsons added 15 points and 12 rebounds and Florida beat Georgia Southern 69-49 to open the Legends Classic.
Rory Spencer led Georgia Southern (1-2) with 13 points.
- In Evanston, Ill., Shelvin Mack had 15 points, Gordon Hayward added 14 points and 10 rebounds, and No. 11 Butler beat Northwestern 67-54.
- In Chapel Hill, N.C., Cetera DeGraffenreid scored 20 points and tied a career high with eight steals to help the No. 4 North Carolina women defeat Coastal Carolina 88-49.

Augusta State's AD named to D-II post
Augusta State director of athletics Clint Bryant was recently appointed to the NCAA's Division II Management Council.
A past chair of the management council and AD at Augusta State for 22 years, Bryant will assume the four-year post after the 2010 NCAA Convention in January.
- USC Aiken senior defender John Lesko was named to the Daktronics NCAA Division II Southeast Region men's soccer second team.
- Clayton Miller , a senior at Lakeside, has signed a baseball scholarship with Peach Belt Conference member Armstrong Atlantic State.
Golf
Martinez girl caps season with title
Megan Sabol , 11, of Martinez, ended her season by winning the Georgia Junior Golf Tour Championship at The Meadow Links Golf Course in Fort Gaines, Ga.
Sabol shot 85-76 to win by 30 strokes and also capture player of the year honors for the second year in row in 10-11 division.
Salil Ghamande , 12, of Evans also won 10-11 division and captured player of the year honors after shooting 75-80.
Russell Sabol , of Martinez, shot 78-73 to finish second in the 12-13 age group and second for the year in that division.
Boxing
Local club to hold sparring matches
The Augusta Boxing Club will hold its monthly sparring matches today at 5:30 at its gym at 1929 Walton Way.
The public is welcome to attend free of charge.
- The South Carolina Silver Gloves State Championships will be held Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. at the new North Augusta Police Athletic League gym at 3294 Augusta Road in Burnettown.

Baseball
Majors considering postseason change
Baseball plans to cut down on off days during the postseason next year.
Commissioner Bud Selig said he's working on tightening up the 2010 playoff schedule so there will be fewer gaps between games.
Selig also said he would continue to discuss instant replay, but it's not expected to be a major topic when owners have a full meeting this morning.
