The Buffalo Bills promoted coordinator Perry Fewell to take over as interim head coach after Dick Jauron was fired on Tuesday.
Bills owner Ralph Wilson ran out of patience with Jauron, who ran out of time to build a contender or come up with a way to fix an offense that sputtered even with the addition of Terrell Owens .
The shakeup, which caught some players by surprise, came during the players' day off and after the Bills (3-6) stumbled out of their off week to fall further out of contention with a 41-17 loss at Tennessee last weekend.
Fewell is in his fourth season as the team's defensive coordinator, and 12th in the NFL who's background is primarily on the defensive side.
Wilson described his decision to change coaches as a difficult one, but one "for the best interest of our team."
"I really don't have anything to say," was all Jauron would say when reached on his cell phone by The Associated Press.
CHIEFS: Wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was suspended without pay for four games Tuesday for violating the NFL's policy against performance-enhancing substances.
Neither the Chiefs nor the league would make further comment and Bowe's agent, Todd France , did not return calls seeking comment.
Bowe leads the Chiefs with 33 catches.
BENGALS: Running back Larry Johnson signed with Cincinnati as a backup, giving the AFC North leaders depth at the position for what's shaping up to be a playoff season.
The Bengals waived defensive tackle Orien Harris to open a roster spot for Johnson, who will be fourth on the depth chart at the outset.
The move comes eight days after the Kansas City Chiefs let him go as he was set to return from his second suspension in the last 12 months.
STEELERS: Backup linebacker Arnold Harrison was waived, making him the first player to lose his job after the Steelers allowed a league-high three kickoff return touchdowns in four games.
Harrison, a former Josey player, had played for the Steelers since 2005, although the former Georgia player missed last season with a knee injury.
Until now, the only previous season Pittsburgh allowed as many as three kickoff return touchdowns was 1986.
DOLPHINS: Running back Ronnie Brown will miss Thursday night's game at Carolina because of an injured right foot, and his status for the rest of the regular season is uncertain. The Dolphins' leading rusher was to see a specialist for further evaluation.
