Jags chartering bus to game at Benedict

Augusta State athletics is sponsoring a Get On Board The Dip Trip to the Jaguars game at Benedict on Saturday.

A chartered bus will leave Christenberry Fieldhouse at 5:45 p.m. for the 7:30 game in Columbia.

Cost is $7 and includes a ticket to the game. It is open to the first 55 fans, including all Augusta State faculty, staff, students and supporters.

- USC Aiken women's coach Mike Brandt announced the signing of Kayla Harris , of Raleigh, N.C., and Porsha Martin , of Douglasville, Ga., to national letters of intent on Tuesday.

Harris averaged 12 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game for Wakefield High School last season.

Martin enters her final season at South Paulding High School needing just 96 points to reach the 1,000-point mark for her career. She also needs only 30 rebounds for 500 during her career.

Ex-S.C. State coach will speak at Paine

Former South Carolina State head football coach and hall of famer Willie Jefferies will be the keynote speaker at the second annual Paine College athletic director's luncheon.

The event will take place at noon on Friday in the college's Warren A. Candler Memorial Library Building.

Roddick pulling out of final ATP tourney

In London, Andy Roddick is withdrawing from the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals because of a left knee injury.

The No. 6-ranked Roddick hurt his knee at October's Shanghai Masters.

French Open runner-up Robin Soderling , No. 9 in the rankings, will take Roddick's spot in the eight-man field.

The draw for the tournament is today, and play starts Sunday. The other participants are Roger Federer , Rafael Nadal , Novak Djokovic , Andy Murray , Juan Martin del Potro , Nikolay Davydenko and Fernando Verdasco .

Baseball

Ex-Cleveland great back with the club

Sandy Alomar Jr. is back with the Cleveland Indians.

The popular former All-Star catcher was hired by new Indians manager Manny Acta as a first-base coach. Alomar spent the past two years as a catching instructor for the New York Mets. He will mentor Cleveland's catchers.

Alomar played 20 seasons in the majors -- 11 in Cleveland. He was a six-time All-Star with the Indians, who enshrined him in their Hall of Fame last season.

Horse Racing

Churchill Downs to double night races

Churchill Downs, the home of the Kentucky Derby, announced plans Tuesday to play host to six night racing events in 2010.

The track debuted night racing at three events during its spring meet this year, and track officials said the experiment was a big success.

The average attendance at night racing was more than 29,000 -- well above average.

Cycling

Positive test will cost Italian medal

Cyclist Davide Rebellin , of Italy, will be stripped of the silver medal in the road race from the 2008 Beijing Olympics because of doping.

The Italian Olympic Committee said it received instructions from the International Olympic Committee on Tuesday.

Rebellin was one of five athletes who tested positive in April for CERA, an advanced version of the blood-boosting drug EPO, in new tests using retroactive blood samples taken at the games.
