ATHENS, Ga. --- After losing to Georgia in all seven of its previous meetings -- including an overtime loss last season -- Wofford managed to hold on in the final seconds and take a 60-57 victory over the Bulldogs on Tuesday.
Trailing 58-56 with 6.1 seconds remaining, Georgia's Dustin Ware had two chances to tie the game at the foul line. But Ware missed the back end of a 1-and-1 and Wofford's Cameron Rundles made both ends of a subsequent 1-and-1 on the other end with 3 seconds remaining.
Georgia (1-1) managed to get one final shot, a 3-point attempt with 1 second left by Trey Thompkins, but it didn't fall.
Georgia coach Mark Fox wasn't pleased with his team's first-half performance, which saw Wofford go on a 16-0 run.
"There was a lot of mental unattachment early in the game," Fox said. "We made a lot of mental errors early that we have not made in practice. We have to be mature enough and gain some experience so we can relax and stay connected mentally to what we are trying to do."
Wofford shot 38 percent from the field (21 of 55), but its 35 percent success rate from beyond the 3-point line might have made the difference in the game as Georgia made only 2 of 14 3-point attempts, both in the second half.
