Presbyterian signs Musketeers golfer

The bigger the golf match, the more likely Richmond Academy's William Sigg is to produce a good round.

"I love the pressure," Sigg said.

Sigg, though, said he will feel less pressure the rest of his senior year after signing a letter of intent to play golf at Presbyterian College on Tuesday.

The NCAA's early weeklong signing period for virtually all sports except football ends today.

"I'm really happy because I know where I'm going to be for the next four years," Sigg said. "It's a big decision."

Coach Gene Crislip said Sigg was the 10th Richmond Academy golfer to sign with a Division-I school since 2003. Sigg will join area products Rob McRae (Richmond Academy) and Lance Johnson (North Augusta) at Presbyterian.

"He always has a knack for having good rounds in the big matches," Crislip said. "He can hit it, has a good short game, and his putting can get really hot."

Sigg carded the Musketeers' low round each of the past two years at the state tournament: 2-under-par 70 in 2008 at Bartram Trail and 1-under 71 last season at Nob North. Richmond Academy finished first and tied for second, respectively, in the tournaments.

Richmond Academy will return four of its top five players from last year and adds Sigg's younger brother, Greyson, a talented freshman.

"It's going to be a good year," William Sigg said. "We have a strong group."

TENNIS SIGNING: Westminster's Rebecca Shine became the first girls tennis player in school history to sign with a Division-I team when she inked a letter of intent to play for Louisville.

Shine, who has won back-to-back GISA Class AAA state titles, has lost one high school match. She will join a Louisville team in transition in 2010-11. The school elevated Mark Beckham to head coach from assistant coach.

"(Beckham) is the one who attracted me to Louisville," Shine said. "He was the nicest and really seemed like he knew what he was doing."
