Atlanta's Maxim Afinogenov beats Kings goalie Erik Ersberg for a goal in the second period Friday. Afinogenov had two goals and two assists in the Thrashers' 7-0 win, their third in a row.

Thrashers rookie Evander Kane, the fourth overall draft pick, also scored two goals and had an assist. His fifth goal made it 1-0 at the 10:22 mark of the second. His sixth was a short-handed goal that ended the scoring with 3:26 remaining.

Kovalchuk, who returned the night before in New York from a broken foot bone that sidelined him for three weeks, has seven points in the past two games.

The Kings, who have lost three of four, outshot Atlanta 38-21, but couldn't keep goalie Ondrej Pavelec from getting his first career shutout.

Afinogenov and Kane each had a goal and an assist during a 5:04 stretch of the second period that included Kings goalie Jonathan Quick getting chased and major penalties and game misconducts to Atlanta's Chris Thorburn and Los Angeles' Raitis Ivanans.

ISLANDERS 4, HURRICANES 3

In Raleigh, N.C., Kyle Okposo scored with 14.4 seconds left in overtime, and John Tavares had the first two-goal game to help the Islanders beat Carolina, extending the Hurricanes' winless streak to 14 games.

Mark Streit added a goal, and Martin Biron made 25 saves for New York. The Islanders blew a three-goal lead before winning in overtime.

BLUE JACKETS 3, DUCKS 2 (SO)

In Columbus, Ohio, Rick Nash scored the winning shootout goal and also had a goal in regulation, and Mathieu Garon stopped both Anaheim shooters in the tiebreaker to lift the Blue Jackets.

Bobby Ryan and Todd Marchant scored for Anaheim, which has lost four in a row on the road.

Ryan Getzlaf had two assists, and Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 27 saves in his first start since Oct. 24.

CAPITALS 3, WILD 1

In Washington, Brian Pothier scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period and the Capitals won their fourth in a row without Alex Ovechkin.

The NHL's highest scoring team was nearly thwarted by a backup goalie who more than doubled his save total for the entire season, but Pothier's wrister from the left circle two minutes into the final period hit just inside the far post to beat Josh Harding, who had been screened on the play.

Cal Clutterbuck scored for the Wild, 2-9-1 on the road this season.

SABRES 2, FLAMES 1

In Buffalo, N.Y., Jason Pominville scored the winner in the fourth round of the shootout, and Ryan Miller made 25 saves to help Buffalo beat Calgary, snapping the Flames' winning streak at four games.

Pominville beat Miikka Kiprusoff with a wrist shot that went between the goalie's legs. Miller then stopped Rene Bourque's attempt to secure the bonus point.

BLACKHAWKS 3, MAPLE LEAFS 2

In Chicago, Patrick Kane scored an early unassisted goal, and Cristobal Huet made 29 saves in Chicago's third consecutive win and sixth in a row at home.

Troy Brouwer and John Madden also scored for the Blackhawks.

Phil Kessel had two goals for Toronto.
