Charged Vols won't play

Three Tennessee freshmen players charged with attempted armed robbery will not play today at Mississippi.

Tennessee spokeswoman Tiffany Carpenter said the team will travel to Oxford without wide receiver NuKeese Richardson , safety Janzen Jackson and defensive back Mike Edwards .

According to sheriff's officials, Richardson remains in jail in lieu of a $19,500 bond. Edwards posted a $19,500 bond, and Jackson was released on his own recognizance.

The three 18-year-olds are accused of demanding money from three people at a gas station near Tennessee's campus early Thursday morning.

Coach Lane Kiffin and athletic director Mike Hamilton have declined comment as they evaluate the situation.

MISSISSIPPI STATE: Running back Anthony Dixon calls today's showdown with Alabama a "woodshed" game, perfectly capturing how the Bulldogs feel when they play the Crimson Tide.

Think Mississippi State can't beat No. 3 Alabama? Think again.

It's happened twice in the past three years and the Bulldogs are more confident than your average sub-.500 team going into a game against the undefeated Crimson Tide.

"I'm looking for a tough, physical game -- one of those woodshed games," Dixon said. "They know it and we know it. They know the last three of four years we've been playing each other it's been knockout. We're just trying to defend our turf, protect our house."

The Crimson Tide need to win tonight to keep their national championship hopes rolling.

Arkansas: Defensive coordinator Willy Robinson was in stable condition after being taken to the hospital Friday.

The university said emergency personnel were called to the Broyles Athletic Complex in Fayetteville but did not provide additional details on what had happened to the assistant coach.

The school said Robinson underwent tests, and his status for tonight's game against Troy was uncertain.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA: Receiver Damian Williams will miss the No. 11 Trojans' game against 25th-ranked Stanford with a sprained right ankle.

Williams is the team's leading receiver with 45 catches for 688 yards and five touchdowns. No other Southern Cal player has more than tailback Joe McKnight 's 17 catches, and No. 2 receiver Ronald Johnson just returned to the Trojans four games ago after breaking his collarbone before the season.

Williams also returns punts for the Trojans. McKnight will return punts against the Cardinal today, while freshman Brice Butler will start at receiver.

It used to be that just getting caught smoking would get you suspended from a college athletic team. These days, I doubt a charge of murder would do it. It amazes me the things I hear college athletes doing, and the pressure to win is so strong, that they just keep right on playing.

TN coaches are waiting until all the facts are in before any decisions are made. Don't want any knee-jerk reactions until all the facts are clear. I suspect 2 of these guys are done playing football at TN. But, they need to be evaluated based on the facts and police reports, not tried and convicted in the court of public opinion. Today's suspension is a good first step. More action to follow once the coaching staff is clear as to what really happened.
