Augusta man wins final Beat the Pros
David McCain Jr. , of Augusta, is the winner of the Beat the Pros contest for Week 11.
McCain correctly picked nine out of 10 high school football games, which matched the best effort by our pros (9-1).
He was one of six readers who went 9-1, and McCain won the drawing to receive a Beat the Pros T-shirt.
Congratulations also to Stephen Fastenau , sports editor of The Columbia County News-Times , who won the cumulative Beat the Pros contest with a record of 92-18.

Whitfield recipient of Falcons' award
Local boxer Ray Whitfield is a winner of the 2009 Atlanta Falcons Community Quarterback Award, which is given to a Georgia youth or young adult who exemplifies leadership and dedication to bettering his/her community.
Hundreds of nominees were reviewed by a selection committee and Whitfield was one of four winners chosen.
Whitfield will receive four 50-yard-line tickets to Atlanta's game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Dec. 6 and a Falcons jacket and jersey. He will also be recognized at halftime and presented with a plaque, while the Augusta Boxing Club will receive a $2,000 donation from the Falcons for program equipment.

USC Aiken to play host to tournament
Third-seeded Augusta State and fifth-seeded USC Aiken will be in action today in the quarterfinals of the Peach Belt Athletic Conference volleyball tournament at the USC Aiken Convocation Center.
The Lady Jaguars, in the midst of the second-winningest season in program history, will take on sixth-seeded Lander at 8 p.m. in final match of the day. At 6, the Lady Pacers will face fourth-seeded Montevallo.
- The USC Aiken men's tennis team is No. 7 in the Southeast Region and No. 17 nationally in the 2010 Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason NCAA Division II rankings.
- Georgia College and State senior Jamie Nevin , a former Harlem standout, was named to the Peach Belt Conference All-Tournament soccer team.
Nevin scored two goals for the Bobcats, who advanced to the semifinals before falling.

Scott fired as coach of league's Hornets
The New Orleans Hornets fired coach Byron Scott and named general manager Jeff Bower as his replacement.
In a statement released Thursday owner George Shinn said the move gives the Hornets the best opportunity "to reach our goals this season."
The Hornets also announced that former New Orleans head coach Tim Floyd will be one of Bower's top assistants.
- Cleveland Cavaliers guard Delonte West was inactive for the second night in a row Thursday, and coach Mike Brown says his status was day to day.
West made the trip to Miami but sat out against the Heat because of an "internal matter," Brown said.

Belgian upset about one-year doping ban
Belgian tennis player Yanina Wickmayer says she was never properly informed of the online reporting requirements for drug-testing that led to her one-year ban from the sport.
At a tearful news conference Thursday, the 20-year-old U.S. Open semifinalist accused the World Anti-Doping Agency and Belgian sports authorities of treating her unfairly and ruining her career.
"The people who made the rules are not really conscious of what this means for my future," Wickmayer said. "I am No. 16 in the world. They are taking my work of 10 years away. Just like that! Just because I didn't fill in (my whereabouts)."
- In Paris, a tired Andy Murray lost to Radek Stepanek 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the third round of the Paris Masters.
