Rainfall record set in Augusta

A record mid-November rainfall that canceled Augusta's annual Veterans Day parade and closed the Columbia County Fall Fair for a second night should be moving out of the area today.

It appears heavy rains of the past two days will be replaced today with drizzle, said Tony Petrolito, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in West Columbia.

"You'll probably see some partial clearing by the afternoon," Mr. Petrolito said Wednesday night.

A flood watch that had extended over most counties in east central Georgia and western South Carolina expired, he said.

Augusta measured 3.29 inches of rain at Bush Field on Wednesday, a record for Nov. 11. The previous mark of 2.39 inches was set in 1947. Daniel Field also saw its share of rain, measuring 2.06 inches on Wednesday, Mr. Petrolito said.

Overnight rains led to isolated flooding in the region. In Columbia County, Emergency Services Director Pam Tucker said two streets were closed Wednesday morning because of high water -- Lake Jean Drive off Hereford Farm Road and Reynolds Farm Road.

Overnight storms also caused some power problems. North Augusta reported a morning power outage on Atomic Road at Martintown Road after an electrical transformer exploded. A Georgia Power spokesman said about 100 customers lost power early Wednesday near Walton Way with other outages scattered about. And in Waynesboro, Ga., 146 customers were without power at one point because of the storms.

Two days of showers should be replaced today by winds, gusting between 20 and 30 mph, while area temperatures will be cool with highs in the upper 50s.
