S.C. State rolls to win

WASHINGTON, D.C. --- Chris Massey caught two touchdown passes and picked up two points on a safety in South Carolina State's 43-13 win over Howard on Saturday.

The Bulldogs (8-1, 6-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic conference), led 22-6 at halftime on two field goals by Blake Erickson, two touchdown passes by Malcolm Long and a safety.

William Ford finished with 108 yards on 16 carries for South Carolina State, which outgained the Bison (2-7, 0-6) 180-62 on the ground.

Terrance Smith, a former Aiken standout, gave the Bulldogs a 10-0 lead late in the first quarter on a 28-yard pass from Long. Massey then caught a 14-yard TD pass from Long for a 17-3 advantage early in the second.

Long finished with 180 yards on 21 of 33 passing for the Bulldogs, who need one more win for their second consecutive conference title.

Howard's Floyd Haigler was 14 of 29 with 159 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions.

COASTAL CAROLINA 26, GARDNER-WEBB 21

In Conway, S.C., Tommy Fraser scored the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter and Coastal Carolina rallied to beat Gardner-Webb.

Fraser, who had 90 yards rushing, scored on a 4-yard run with 4:17 to play for the Chanticleers (4-5, 2-2 Big South). Zach MacDowall went 25 for 42 with 332 yards.

He threw touchdowns of 25 yards to Akeem Wesley and 39 yards to Marcus Whitener. The Chanticleers rolled up 473 yards of total offense.

Defensively, Josh Norman intercepted three passes for the Chanticleers.

Patrick Hall rushed for 66 yards and two touchdowns for the Bulldogs (5-4, 2-2). Hall's 1-yard run near the end of the third quarter put the Bulldogs ahead 21-17.

CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 46, PRESBYTERIAN 32

In Clinton, S.C., A.J. Toscano threw four touchdowns as Charleston Southern earned a win over Presbyterian.

Toscano completed 18 of his 32 pass attempts. He also rushed for a touchdown, and tied a school record with five touchdowns in a game. Gerald Stevenson added 149 receiving yards and two touchdowns on 10 catches for the Buccaneers (4-5, 2-2 Big South Conference).

The Blue Hose (0-9, 0-4) were paced by Lance Byrd, who rushed for 274 yards and two touchdowns. Byrd, a freshman, broke the school record for rushing yards in his first career start.
