Montevallo women get to league final

Eighth-seeded Montevallo pulled off another upset in the Peach Belt Conference Women's Tournament, knocking off fourth-seeded Georgia College & State 2-1 to advance to Sunday's final.

Montevallo, a 1-0 winner over top-seeded Columbus State in the first round, will face second-seeded Armstrong Atlantic State, which beat third-seeded Lander 2-1 in the other semifinal at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans.

In the men's semifinals, second-seeded Lander beat third-seeded Clayton State 2-1 in double overtime and top-seeded Flagler beat No. 4 Montevallo 3-2.

The women's final begins at 1 p.m. The men's final is at 3.

- USC Aiken's John Lesko and Troy Watson were selected to the PBC Men's Soccer All-Conference Team.

Watson, a junior midfielder, and Lesko, a senior defender, made the second team. The teams were announced at a banquet in Evans on Friday.

Lander's Adam Arthur and Clayton State's Kyle Timm were named co-players of the year. Flagler had the freshman of the year, Joseph Toby , and the coach of the year, John Lynch .

- Augusta native Mary Rob Plunkett , a junior goalkeeper for Georgia College & State, was named to the PBC Women's Soccer All-Conference Team.

Plunkett made the first team. USC Aiken senior Annie Whitley made the second team as a defender.

Armstrong Atlantic State's Kristin Burton was named the league's player of the year. The freshman of the year is Kelsey Martin from North Georgia, whose coach, Chris Adam s, was also honored.

Clemson cruises to exhibition victory

In Clemson, S.C., freshman Noel Johnson scored 19 points off the bench and starting guard Tanner Smith added 16 to lead Clemson to a 99-51 exhibition win over Francis Marion on Friday night.

It was the only public exhibition game for the Tigers, who will open the regular season Friday against Presbyterian. The game tips off at 8 p.m.

- Aiken Tech opened the season with a loss, falling to Gulf Coast 73-71 in the Aiken Tech Invitational.

The Knights' were led by Antrjuan Albright 's 18 points.

United States, Italy open Fed Cup final

Flavia Pennetta can settle her score with American Alexa Glatch in the opening match of the Fed Cup final. Italy meets the United States on a slow red clay court in the best-of-five series beginning today at the Rocco Polimeni club in Reggio Calabria, Italy.

Francesca Schiavone , will face U.S. Open quarterfinalist Melanie Oudin in the second singles today. Reverse singles are set for Sunday, plus a possible decisive doubles match featuring Liezel Huber and Vania King of the U.S. against Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci .

- In Basel, Switzerland, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic reached the semifinals of the Swiss Indoors, staying on course to meet in the final.

Earlier, Djokovic called for "crucial" meetings to address the heavy playing schedule faced by top tennis players. The Serb said that more players were getting injured because of the demands of a long season.

- In Valencia, Spain, top-seeded Andrew Murray carried his comeback into the Valencia Open semifinals by cruising past Albert Montanes 6-4, 6-2.

- Frenchman Richard Gasquet will go before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland on Tuesday for what he says was a cocaine-tainted kiss in a nightclub.

South Africa body's chief is suspended

South Africa's Olympic governing body has suspended Athletics South Africa in the fallout over Caster Semenya 's gender tests.

Semenya won the 800-meters at the world championships at Berlin in August after the IAAF said it had ordered gender tests. ASA president Leonard Chuene Chuene later said he lied about his knowledge of the tests.
