Ed Tarver: Augustan will resign as a state senator to be a U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Georgia.

The U.S. Senate confirmed him Thursday night as the new U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Georgia, according to Erica Chabot, the press secretary for the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The only step left in the process is for President Obama to execute the appointment. Mr. Tarver will have to resign his seat as a state senator from Augusta before taking the oath of office.

"I found out about 4:45 (Friday) morning," Mr. Tarver said. "It was certainly the first thing I learned when I woke up this morning."

He said he didn't waste time letting others know about the confirmation.

"I was extremely proud of the honor I have received. I immediately wanted to share the news with my wife and others. I woke some people up this morning to let them know it had taken place," he said with a laugh.

Mr. Tarver will replace Edmund A. Booth Jr., who retired. He will be the first black to serve in the position, overseeing a district covering 43 counties, stretching from Thurmond Lake to the Florida border, with offices in Augusta, Savannah, Statesboro, Brunswick, Dublin and Waycross.

"I'm certainly excited about the opportunity and the challenges that lie ahead," he said. "I look forward to being sworn in and serving the Southern district of Georgia as its U.S. attorney."

The job pays about $150,000 a year.

FILLING the SEAT

Sen. Ed Tarver, D-Augusta, will resign as a state senator before he takes the oath of office for U.S. attorney.

Richmond County Board of Elections Executive Director Lynn Bailey has speculated that Gov. Sonny Perdue would want to have a special election so District 22 would have Atlanta representation.

If the General Assembly is in session at the time, Mr. Perdue will have 10 days after the seat becomes open to issue a writ containing the date of the election. If it's not in session, he has more leeway, Mrs. Bailey said.

The cost of a special election could be $70,000 to $80,000.

and to think, that tax-evading crook, charles walker, once defeated sen. tarver in a democratic nominee bid for his current senate seat. real smart, district 22. i sure hope the next senator is appointed, as was mr. tarver. if we have to rely on this districts constituents to elect a replacement, i've got a feeling his office would have to be set up at the state pen in estill, sc.

jasonpilgrim

LOL @ people who laugh @ others for mispelled words. Get a hobby!!!

Ed Tarver represents the best of Augusta -- a Butler High graduate who went on to get his undergraduate degree and then law school -- a community activist who has worked his way to and through leadership positions in both civic & professional endeavodors -- tthanks Ed for all you have done & will do -- not an Augusta black leader -- a true leader of all Augusta

ColCo

District 22's Senators have an interesting track record in the Federal system, one Federal Judge (Randy Hall), one U.S. Attorney (Ed Tarver) and one Federal Jailbird (Charles Walker).

catfish201

Ed Tarver is a good man and will represent Augusta well.

i'm kind of glad that some people are reserving their judgement. i find some peoples opinions so radical, that, they almost belong in the comic section. however, in case i didn't say it earlier, congratulations to sen. tarver. i've always admired your morals, and convictions, and you are very deserving of this job. thanks, again, for the honesty you displayed in representing the augusta area. thanks also, for paying your taxes, and not laundering money, and not ripping off your own employees, and not having to whine and scream racism because your crooked behind got caught, convicted, and sentenced to pay your debts to society.

Good luck Mr. Tarver

Senator Tarver graduated from Glenn Hills High Wiz ,like I did. Congrads 2U for your accomplishment Mr. Tarver.

charlesd

I believe their appointment is at the pleasure of the President of The United States.

" Let he who is without sin......" Congrats to Senator Tarver. However, put Charles in jail and almost immediately Augusta looses ten million dollars. Just who is the crook???

ColCo

Ten million? Where?

lylagirl

I thought he was a graduate of Glenn Hills High...news to me about graduating from Butler. Anyway...congratualations Mr. Tarver on your new endeavor. You deserve it...you have a true heart and you have always had Augusta's back. God's speed, sir!

Pu239

That sure looks like Ed Tarver in my GHHS annual...a striking resemblence to his wife Bev too. Congratulations Mr. Tarver!

EARL84

Congrats to Senator Tarver. While I do not share his political views for the most part, I do know he is a very good man, and will do good work as a U.S. attorney.....provided he does not appoint justus4 as one of his advisors. Go ahead and review "all federal cases"? I mean you can't write comedy like this! Oh justus, you should be on a sitcom or reality show. That would be one I would watch

corgimom

Earl, justnuts actually means ONE Federal case, but he is so dumb that he thinks nobody knows who he is. He provides me with laughs every day he's on here.

FedupwithAUG

as justus said "His first mission should be a review of all federal cases prosecuted in his AO and publish the findings. His mandate should be to exposed the corruption in judical circuits and the adverse impact it has had on the minority community. That challenge alone will make him a marked man, but that's why he was appointed. Judgement reserved..." The Minority White people need justus!
