Grovetown makes stand to wrap up year with win

Grovetown football's season of firsts ended with a last stand.

The Warriors, who had not played a game in three weeks, heard during that time from their seniors and coaches about what it would mean for the inaugural team to finish with a winning record.

Grovetown responded with a 34-33 victory Friday over Mount Paran, an Atlanta-area private school that entered the game with one loss. The Warriors (6-4) won by turning back the Eagles' two-point conversion attempt with 1:11 remaining.

After the game, the Warriors doused first-year head coach Rodney Holder with ice, sprinted to their end of the field, formed a huddle and began a chant:

"Our house! Our house! Six and four!" they shouted.

Above them, the moon was clearly visible atop the scoreboard, as were the final orange numbers.

"It's like a script from a movie," Holder said.

Grovetown's final defensive play seemed that way.

Mount Paran marched down the field on its final possession and scored on a bruising, 7-yard run from fullback David Ian. The Eagles then lined up for the two-point conversion and victory on the road.

Grovetown senior linebacker Dominique Mingo said he heard an official say No. 44, Ian, "is killing y'all. If y'all can't stop him, y'all ain't going to win."

"I heard the crowd and I heard they were behind us," Mingo said. "I was thinking to myself, 'We're not losing this game.' If I broke all my limbs, I would have made sure we didn't lose this game."

Ian took the handoff from the 2-yard line and bulled his way into the line. Grovetown senior lineman Marvon Danzie said he was doubled-teamed, and he dropped to the ground to form a pile at the line of scrimmage.

Linebacker Chris McElhaney made the initial hit on Ian, and the rest of the Warriors defense swarmed in to hold him up until the play was blown dead.

The Warriors recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the remaining time.

Holder told his captains throughout the three weeks the team had to prepare for Mount Paran to issue reminders to their teammates that the game Friday was for a winning record and place in history.

"They're going out winners," Holder said. "There's something to be said about 6-4 and being a winner."

After facing an early 13-0 deficit, Grovetown's spark in the second quarter was sophomore Myles McDavid, who entered at quarterback and moved the Warriors down the field with three runs for 30 yards and ran the option with senior Seth Hill.

Hill's 15-yard run off the left tackle pulled the Warriors within 13-7 and salvaged some momentum heading into the half.

The running back scored four times during his final game and finished with 245 yards on the ground.

GROVETOWN 34, MOUNT PARAN CHRISTIAN 33

PLAY OF THE GAME: After scoring to pull within a point with 1:11 left, Mount Paran decided to go for two and the victory on the road. Grovetown's defense stuffed Eagles' fullback David Ian at the goal line and held him there until the officials moved in to blow the play dead.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Grovetown running back Seth Hill rushed for 245 yards and scored four times during his final high school game.

WHY GROVETOWN WON: The Warriors made the right adjustments. Maybe the biggest was playing sophomore quarterback Myles McDavid , allowing junior Xavier Crane to play safety full time and stay fresh for the Eagles' punishing option offense.

WHY MOUNT PARAN LOST: The Eagles turned the ball over in two crucial situations on fumbles and could not stop Hill during the second half.
