On a frigid Friday night, Richmond Academy's players waited 15 minutes after the game for the ceremonial ice water drenching of their head coach.

Chris Hughes said he didn't mind after the Musketeers knocked off Evans, 21-15, for their second huge win in as many weeks.

After finishing 0-10 two seasons ago, Richmond Academy (7-3) completed the regular season as the Region 3-AAAA runner-up. The Musketeers will play host to a first-round playoff game for the first time since 1998.

"This is fantastic," Hughes said. "It shows these seniors have turned this thing around. They're special, and it's turned into a special year."

"This feels really good," Richmond Academy quarterback Mar-Quon Medlock said. "This means more than I can say."

Just two weeks ago, Richmond Academy was left for dead following an upset loss in overtime to Cross Creek. The Musketeers rebounded the following week with a win over Hephzibah before knocking off Evans for the first time since 1976.

The Knights (8-2), the No. 3 seed in Region 3-AAAA, played without senior running back Jonathan Finch.

Finch, who has rushed for 1,024 yards this season, posted a pair of second-half rushing touchdowns last season to lift Evans to a 27-10 over Richmond Academy.

Finch received a two-day in-house suspension, which extended to Friday. Evans coach Marty Jackson said it's a team rule that when a player gets suspended at school the day of a game, that player doesn't see game action.

Evans rushed 29 times for 158 yards. Jamerson Turner led the Knights with 74 yards on 11 carries, while Will Scott added 73 yards on 12 carries.

"We don't predicate around one player," Jackson said about Finch's absence. "He's a good player, but I was proud of Jamerson and Will Scott."

One player made a huge difference for Richmond Academy. Senior running back Jerrel Anderson, still recovering from flu-like symptoms, rushed 29 times for 220 yards and a touchdown. Anderson sat out of practice this week, excluding Thursday's walk-through.

Early in the fourth quarter, Anderson took a hard hit and lost his breath. He walked off the field, but returned for the Muskeeteers' next possession. He capped a 65-yard drive with a 4-yard run, extending Richmond Academy's lead to 21-9 with 6:34 remaining.

"I told coach I had to finish the game," Anderson said.

Evans led 3-0 deep into the third quarter. But Medlock punched it in on a sneak on fourth-and-goal from the 1.

On the ensuing kickoff, Richmond Academy recovered an Evans fumble. Five plays later, Medlock hit Drek Reid on a slant over the middle for 33-yard touchdown. The Musketeers led 14-3.

Great job ARC. Coach Hughes & Coach Grooms should be the top 2 vote getters in coach of the year. ARC players you have achieved something VERY SPECIAL. Turning around a program with the rich football tradition after so many forgettable years is a HUGE ACCOMPLISHMENT You have restored pride in this rich very famous school. Keep it up young men & continue to be leaders in your school on and off the field. Since there are so many grads from ARC MANY in the community are watching you. Continue to EXHIBIT CHARACTER on and off the field and all of you will be winners in life no matter what the final score is on the football field...

ARC could make a good run in the play-offs.

Dakota

Great game by ARC. Two big wins in two weeks, and a home field advantage in the playoffs. What a turnaround from a few years ago.

Sorry Finch didn't play. The outcome may not have changed. Hats off to Marty Jackson for having the backbone to set down a star athlete for making poor decisions in his life.

The Idiot of the Game (the Chosen One, #4, "Butch Cassidy") should have been benched for his stupid decision to smack an ARC player heading back to the huddle after the play was over. Unsportsmanlike, 15 yards, first down, touchdown late in the game. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Evans, run deep into the playoffs, but keep your head. Penalties are killing you.

Chris Hughes is a straight up chest pounding beast!

AC - last week I commented that a certain player got away with everything, was devisive on the practice field and my comment was deleted for policy violation. I never mentioned a name or number. Dakota takes a shot at a kid who has more heart than anyone on the field and his comment remains. Did me make a bad decision? YES. Why arent you (Dakota) calling #87 an idiot? He had a late hit (roughing the passer) when it was 3rd and long. Why not call #12 and idiot for spiking the ball with a 1:30 to go, down by 6? Why not call the defensive coaches idiots for not changing the defense to stop the run off tackle? Why not call the Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator idiots...they run the same play every game and never vary from a boring game plan (easily defended - ask the Glynn Academy coaches who sat in the stands talking about how predictable Evans was). Here is the bottom line... Evans made mistakes and ARC completely out played them. ARC was the better team last night! I guess we can all talk about it on our 4 hour drive to Ware County next week.

There is no excuse for the poor, classless behaivior that the Evans players exhibited on Friday night. This an extremely talented team that has no sort of leadership and shame on coach Jackson for not being able to harness the talent that he has on this team. Arc is supposed to be the school full of thugs and all sorts of problems, but it was quite apparent who the better team with much more class was on this night. Go musketeers!

Hey! The fountain at 15th and Broad was purple yesterday! Did anybody see it? I can't think of a better reason....Way to go, Musketeers!

what is wrong

imright your right, they need to behave better. Their superstar Jonathan Finch displays this behavior off the field. If he was not the star, he would have served a 10 day out of school suspension.

imright1

Thank you what is wrong. But do give Evans high school credit for not putting finch above other students by rightfully suspending him. Great players in Richmond county tend to find a way to get on the field amidst suspensions. One of the major problems overlooked by the RCBOE
