Surprise attack

  • Follow Editorials

Different stories are emerging about Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the U.S. Army psychiatrist who is alleged to have killed 13 people and wounded 30 others at Fort Hood, Texas, on Thursday.

Hasan's former imam recalled him as "a reserved guy with a nice personality." Fort Hood's Muslim chaplain "found him to be very pleasant."

But others recollect Hasan -- whose specialty was treating traumatized and distressed military -- as a poorly performing soldier who was increasingly emotional and critical about U.S. action in Afghanistan and Iraq. And he recently received orders to deploy overseas.

Hasan's aunt told The Washington Post he had been harassed about being Muslim in the years after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorism attacks.

Harassed? Really? It should be noted that, months ago, Hasan set off law enforcement's radar because of Internet postings about suicide bombings, "including posts that equated suicide bombers to soldiers who throw themselves on a grenade to save the lives of their comrades," the Associated Press said.

Hasan lives in the most religiously tolerant country on Earth. But if he was on the 'Net, degrading America and holding suicide bombers up for praise, he should expect to get bombarded with scorn.

But for sheer callousness, it would be hard to top President Obama in the wake of the deadliest killings at a U.S. military installation. A chief executive with any presence of mind about the gravity of the situation would have offered heartfelt, respectful and reassuring words to a shaken people.

But what did he do Thursday? He sandwiched in a couple minutes' worth of comments about the slayings among remarks he was giving at a conference hosted by the Interior Department's Bureau of Indian Affairs.

These are his uniformed people who were killed, but he seemed more emotionally engaged in thanking the organizers of this obscure conference than in showing genuine remorse for the fallen. The president either is detached from reality, or he simply doesn't care. What a cold fish.

Justice has yet to play out to determine the level of Hasan's guilt or innocence. But the pieces of the puzzle coming together are forming a portrait of a man who might have been helped -- or thwarted -- if those pieces were assembled and scrutinized sooner by the people around him.

Hasan gave every indication to superiors that he was a ticking time bomb leaning toward domestic jihad. That kind of anti-Americanism -- regardless of what race, religion or creed you are -- cannot be tolerated in the U.S. military. And if it's detected, it needs to be weeded out immediately.

He should have milked the gravity of this situation and postured on a flatbed trailer with a megaphone. The man simply cannot recognize an opportunity to exploit the pain and suffering of others.

"Hasan lives in the most

"Hasan lives in the most religiously tolerant country on Earth." This is the faith-based opinion of The Augusta Chronicle editorial staff (ACES) which goes on further to falsely suppose that Maj. Nidal Hasan was harassed not because of his religion but because he was an outspoken opponent within the U.S. military community of US was in Iraq & Afghanistan. That sort of dissent simply is not tolerated by the gung-ho group mentality of military killer bees. I am appalled by the religious hatred I heard on right-wing "Christian" stations today towards Islam & towards President Obama. ACES parrots the faux Christianity & false patriotism of both the religious right & secular war hawk media. 3, 2, 1...attack Obama over the Fort Hood shooting. Yeah, that's the ticket for the disgruntled Republican rabble! Exactly what America does not need is more Islamophobia or witch hunt to purge Muslims from the military. ACES does not offer salve or solutions. This tragic incident may be the most inflammatory situation since 9/11. ACES should call for the US military to examine its long standing policy of reassigning poorly performing individuals to combat zones. The military bureaucracy bears blame.

Yeah, Cain. We should continue to support this fine jihadist that just shot up Ft Hood to show what REAL Christians we are. Brilliant deduction. Way to think.

If this wild man were a

If this wild man were a Christian and yelled praise to God Almighty while shooting up American soldiers, you can bet the radical left would be covering the air waves with endless criticism of the hate filled Christians. It's currently politically incorrect to criticize any Muslim under any circumstances and any military man taking actions against a practicing Muslim will see his career effectively ended. The perspective of our current administration needs to be changed today to prevent this prevailing attitude from precipitating another incident. (As an example of how an administration's attitude can affect a situation, look at how border guards were treated, during the Bush era, for doing their job) Try to think of what will happen when the Gitmo detainees are released into this country.

This shooting is terrible and

This shooting is terrible and I was really shocked that the President didn't address this issue directly and away from this meeting first. I really can't understand how he could not do that or how he felt it was not called for. I hate to have to agree with ACES but they are correct about this and it SUCKS. I bet you see a special press conference called where Obama is uber-somber, with solid emotions shown and a tough resolve to investigate and get to the bottom of this. EYES ROLLING. This

The Chronicle is just as sick

The Chronicle is just as sick as some of you in attempting to use this incident to personally and politically attack our President. You all will not have been satisfied if they showed him dropping to his knees in prayer. I have seen too many fellow soldiers killed in combat and in peace time serving our country to let a small minority of Naysayers used them that was. I served in 3 Corps and can tell you that the men and women that I know and knew would not be looking at our President with the same scornful eyes and obvious biases that some of you have. He could of attended Church and had Rev. Roberts and 100 others religious leaders there and you would still criticize him.As far as anyone know he could be at Ft. Hood meeting privately with families and not grandstanding in front of T.V. cameras so you Naysayers could decide whether or not he was sincere or stalling for his " Muslim" friends to release the next Cell. EYES ROLLING.

No " Christian"I know is filled with hate. Plenty say that they are Christians, but their actions and words betray them. The fault is with the murderous perpetrator of this crime and unless evidence come forth to prove otherwise, he alone is responsible.

wrong, ispy: a national

wrong, ispy: a national tragedy occurs and the "people's president" can barely summon up the time for a quick soundbyte? had he dropped to his knees in prayer / attended church with 101 religious leaders / grandstanded in front of the cameras, it would have been a show of compassion (admittedly of the "Mission Accomplished" variety, which in hindsight isn't always the best idea); instead, he comments briefly. and continues to celebrate native american history day or whatever. kinda like the last witless boob who, when informed of a probable terrorist attack, continued reading to elementary students. i wish this nation could find a leader instead of electing idiot after idiot after idiot...

I wonder how many more "plants" are in the ranks of our military just waiting to perform their duty by killing more Americans.hussein declared that the U.S. is no longer a Christian nation so, you all can stop arguing about it.We are now a muslim nation and there is NOTHING anyone can do to stop it.Might be best advised to get your prayer rug soon,it will be required in the not so distant future.Kinda like the wonderous health care-get it or go to jail.

My problem is with the local

My problem is with the local press interviewing a local Imam and not asking the tough questions. The Imam was allowed to give propoganda that the Muslim faith is a peaceful religion when it's own Koran says differently. Yes Islam was peaceful when it first started but became violent when it had enough followers to back itself up. Try reading the Koran chronologically instead of the way it is constructed and you will find that it became intolerant over time and has the only holy book to specifically call on the death, destruction and/or subjugation of two specific religions. Those religions being Christians and Jews. Mohammad used his "holy" mosques to stage his warrior raids and they are still used that way today. Muslims use these mosques to fight from and when they are attacked back they run to the press and cry that their holy places are being targeted. When is the press going to quit coddling people of this religion and start asking about the not so "peaceful" parts of the Koran? Although it really won't make a difference because the Koran also tells Islams followers that it is permissible to LIE to their enemies. And who are their enemies? Anyone who is not Muslim!

ISPY, I never saw you refer
Unpublished

ISPY, I never saw you refer to Bush as "our president." But, suddenly, with whammy Obammy in office, it's "our president." Unemployment is now over 10%. How's that "change" working out for you folks? As for Christian hypocrisy, I'll admit there is plenty. But, when a Christian kills an abortion doctor in the name of his faith, there is an immediate condemnation of such action by Christian leaders. When some Muslim blows himself up and takes a few dozen with him, or goes on a shooting rampage at a base, where is the condemnation by Muslims and Muslim leaders? I dont' see it, which tells me that they support it. This lunatic was born here, and took an oath to serve and protect the USA and American lives when he joined. I 'm sure you remember. I sure do. You don't take an oath to take American lives and serve ALLAH! As for Muslims, I don't think there is one in the world, including in the USA that truly wants peace with Israel, or peace at all, unless it is peace with their leaders in control. Yes, I said that, and I'll bet a lot of you are thinking the same thing!

The political correctness

The political correctness that is going on in this country is going to do us in. Islam and Muslims and are protected group and nothing is done to insult them, yet HBO can have a show where someone urinates on a picture of Jesus. In the movie 2012, the only religious structure standing is a Mosque, other religious structures are shown crumbling to the ground. Hassan was a ticking time bomb, the Army had its clues. The Army passes these troubled individuals on for the next unit to deal with, and then they are passed on again. I know of two situations in one organization on Ft. Gordon that were not dealt with and the individual was just passed on. One deals with a soldier who sexually harrassed three DA civilians, and he was quietly shuffled on to harrass again. The second is ongoing where a soldier assaulted another of higher rank and offered to kick his @#$, and this is not being dealt with as well. Our country is the greatest on earth, but falling fast with the political correctness and certain groups being off limits to criticism, while others are made fun and vilified. Look on different forms of media and you will see nothing about the Muslim connection of Hassan.

One of his minders finally

One of his minders finally reminded Obama to sign the Executive Directive last night to display flags at half staff until Veteran's Day. I'm sure he didn't want to make a "premature decision" during the day yesterday and required "consultations with military advisors" to decide if that was the appropriate action. Plus, he probably had to get a "Mommy, may I?" note from Queen Nancy since she was trying to round up votes for her doomed bill. She probably didn't want the diversion of attention away from her solemn quest for something as "meaningless" as military casualties.

Mohammad also stated that

Mohammad also stated that non-muslim children are the same as their fathers and mothers. In other words, children of any religion or nationality other than Muslim are legitimate targets. What a crock of crap Muslim leaders are trying to shove down our throats that it is a peaceful religion. The only peaceful Muslims are the one's too cowardly to follow the TRUE tenants of their religion by participating in Jihad in the destruction of all others.

Screaming Allah is great before he shoots innocent soldiers is an act of Islamic Terrorism. Cain, we should start by looking into your personal information too. Who knows where the next Muslim attack will come from. The left still tries to prevent us from investigating people like this. I'm not sure if people like you really want to keep us safe. Why is it that Hussein was so

Why is it that Hussein was so quick to call the actions of a white police officer "stupid", yet when a Muslim kills 13 people and wounds 38 right after yelling "God is Great" in Arabic that we "should not rush to conclusions"?

LolaJean, that is exactly

LolaJean, that is exactly what the leftstream media did when the guy in Tennessee went on a shooting spree and they found one of Bill Oreilly's books in his apartment. But let a Muslim shout God is Great and shoot 51 people and they report nothing of the sort. I think that in and of itself tells the entire story that they will cherry pick what they report, no wonder their ratings are falling so fast they are out of touch with "mainstream" America.
