Lady Jags place 6th at golf tournament

In Austin, Texas, Augusta State shot 8-over-par 288 on Tuesday in the third and final round of the Challenge at Onion Creek and finished in sixth place.

The tournament closed out the fall schedule for the Lady Jaguars, who were led by freshman Natalie Wille (73-71-69) and senior Sarah Mooney (70-73-70). They shared 10th place at 3-over 213.

Texas A&M, the 24th-ranked team in the nation, shot 2-under 278 and claimed a three-stroke victory over San Francisco. The Aggies' Julia Boland claimed medalist honors by one stroke over teammate Ashley Freeman .

- USC Aiken freshman forward Scott Newby was selected as the Peach Belt Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week on Tuesday, hours before the Pacers fell 2-0 to Lander in the league tournament quarterfinals.

Newby is the second Pacer to claim the award in the 2009 season. Troy Watson has been selected twice (Sept. 9 and Sept. 22).

The Pacers finished the season at 7-11-1.

Peach Belt to hold free soccer event

The Peach Belt Conference is holding its second annual Breakfast with the Champions Community Day on Saturday morning at Blanchard Woods Park. The free soccer event, which begins at 9:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast and runs until noon, is for children ages 6-12, male or female.

In conjunction with the conference's men's and women's championships, which will be held Sunday, the event will give youth participants an opportunity to connect with collegiate soccer student-athletes through a mini-clinic and fun soccer activities.

Participants are encouraged to bring a ball, shin guards and cleats. Parents are requested to sign up their children by Thursday to reserve a spot and T-shirt. For more information, call John Semeraro at the league office at (706) 364-9715.

German player has case of swine flu

Tommy Haas , the 17th-ranked player from Germany, is dealing with a case of swine flu.

The 31-year-old Haas pulled out of a tournament in Stockholm last week after becoming ill. He first thought it was normal flu but decided to get tested.

He also pulled out of this week's Swiss Indoors and is unlikely to play next week at the Paris Masters.

Andy Murray came back from a long-term wrist injury by beating wild card Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-3, 6-1 in the first round of the Valencia Open. The top-seeded Scot next plays Leonardo Mayer , who beat Igor Andreev, 6-3, 6-3.

- In Basel, Switzerland, Novak Djokovic beat Andreas Beck, of Germany, 6-3, 7-5 in the first round at Swiss Indoors.

The third-ranked Serb next plays 59th-ranked Jan Hernych of Czech Republic, who beat Peter Luczak, 6-3, 6-4.

Queen pays visit to London Games site

Queen Elizabeth II visited the Olympic Park on Tuesday to inspect preparations for the 2012 London Games.

The queen toured the site in east London for the second time since the British capital was awarded the Olympics in 2005.

Elizabeth is expected to open the Olympics in 2012 when she will be celebrating her 60th year as queen.

- The members of the U.S. Olympic hockey team will be announced during the broadcast of the NHL's Winter Classic on New Year's Day. The 23-man squad will be led by Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson .

College Softball

Three found dead in North Dakota pond

Police said three missing North Dakota college softball players were found dead in their vehicle, which was pulled from a pond northwest of Dickinson.

Police Lt. Rod Banyai said Tuesday night that police are "still investigating" the cause of the deaths.
