Calvin Hicks: Former chief tax appraiser is credited with modernizing Augusta's office.

Augusta Board of Assessors Chairman Charles F. Smith said DeKalb had been recruiting Mr. Hicks for some time, but Mr. Hicks opted to serve out his contract. His last day working in Augusta was Thursday.

"They've been after Calvin for a long, long time," Mr. Smith said. "The truth is, we were really hoping he would stay here."

For the time being, the tax assessor's office is operating without a chief appraiser, with Mr. Smith serving as the interim department head. Fortunately, it's a slow time of year right now, Mr. Smith said, and he hopes to have the position filled within three months.

Deputy Chief Appraisers Donna Murray and Melanie Oglesby are handling day-to-day operations of the department until a replacement for Mr. Hicks is hired, Mr. Smith said.

Mr. Hicks was hired in 2006 after serving as chief appraiser for Macon-Bibb County for 17 years. He replaced E.W. "Sonny" Reece II, who resigned under pressure from the board in March 2005.

Mr. Smith credited Mr. Hicks with modernizing the office, streamlining operations and updating land value calculations.

Thank you Dekalb county for taking this appraiser from Richmond County and if you need more tax people take the whole department. We'll even throw in Fred Russell to spend the money for you. If you need commissioners we have them also,
help yourself. By the way, if you need someone to put up a
road baracade because of a sink hole in the middle of the street
in Brookfield Subdivision for over a month we have a lot of these workers also.

first and formost the assessor's dept deals only with value, they don't have anything to do w/your taxes, and more importantly the sinkhole in fornt of your house...hey heres a thought why not contact your commissioner!! there's were your money is being spent!!!! beofre making uninformed statements here's a website to explain...WWW.GAAO.ORG why not get upset at those on the commission who want to obligate you to 40-50 million dollars for the TEE center??? what does the tax commissioner, or any office have to do with that, one other thing to think about..if the TEE center is that great where please tell me what other person/persons are lining up to invest their money into this venture

Tell it like it is

DeKalb County just wait your taxes are sure to go up even if your house is valued less than previous years.
Thank you for taking Mr. Hicks away from us.
