Powder Puff comes to Davidson

If you were to have walked in John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School on Friday, a sea of four colors would have surrounded you: red, for the senior class, blue, for the junior class, green for the sophomore class, and purple, for the freshmen.

The reason they were dressed in these colors was for one thing only: The Spirit Stick. It is awarded each year to the class with the most spirit points, and it is Davidson tradition. Friday however, was the ultimate spirit points game, powder puff football.

Powder puff is a spoof on traditional football. The boys lead the cheers and the girls play flag football. On the day of the game, each grade shows their love for their color by making unique class color shirts to wear to the big game. Your grade has a cheer squad, football players and a majority of the class participating. That's what makes playing even more fun.

This year's game was really important for the class of 2013, my class, the freshmen, because it was our chance to establish ourselves. The tag line "we run DFA!" was found on T-shirts and signs. Seniors donned shirts with this tagline: "Who's bad? We bad!" The sophomores, having been freshmen last year, wrote "Freshmen are going down!" on fliers around school. The juniors had a friendly tagline on their signs: "Let's all have fun, even though we will win."

In the end in both games there would only be two winners. In the freshmen vs. sophomores, the freshmen won. In the seniors vs. juniors, the seniors won. In the cheerleading competition the sophomores came in first, seniors second, juniors third, and freshmen fourth.

The powder puff games were fun and filled with support from teammates. You could feel the adrenaline in the air. Yes, there was disappointment in both areas of competition, but there can only be one winner. May the colors of each team's flags continue to wave with the red, blue, green, and purple.
