S.C. State rolls to fourth victory in a row

ORANGEBURG, S.C. --- Malcolm Long threw two touchdown passes and South Carolina State defeated Delaware State 52-10 on Saturday.

The Bulldogs (7-1, 5-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) scored on their first five possessions, including two touchdowns from Long to Oliver Young.

Young caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Long with 9:25 left in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead, and extended the lead to 31-7 on an 80-yard touchdown catch with 8:24 left in the second quarter.

Young finished with 135 yards on four catches and Terrance Smith, a former Aiken standout, had five receptions for 91 yards in South Carolina State's fourth consecutive win.

The Bulldogs finished with 513 yards and scored on all five of their red-zone chances.

CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 31, VMI 21

In Lexington, Va., Charleston Southern scored 10 points in the final 6 minutes, capped by B.J. Hackworth's 12-yard run, to beat Virginia Military Institute.

With the game tied 21-21 after three quarters, the Buccaneers (3-5, 1-2 Big South) took the lead on an 18-yard field goal by John Paglia. On VMI's next possession, Andrew McKain intercepted a pass from Kyle Hughes that set up the Buccaneers at the Keydets' 24-yard line. Hackworth scored two plays later.

SAVANNAH STATE 45, EDWARD WATERS 24

In Savannah, Ga., Justin Babb rushed for 167 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead Savannah State.

Babb scored touchdowns of 57, 23 and 10 yards and caught a 52-yard scoring pass from Kurvin Curry as the Tigers (2-6) broke their six-game losing streak. Babb also caught three passes for 89 yards to help Savannah State finish with 485 yards of offense.

Curry was 13 for 26 for 234 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 64 yards and a 10-yard touchdown on 21 carries.

LIBERTY 55, PRESBYTERIAN 19

In Lynchburg, Va., Andreakis Allen and SirChauncey Holloway each ran for two touchdowns to lead Liberty.

Holloway, who rushed for 99 yards, scored on runs of 4 and 14 yards. Allen ran for 92 yards, with touchdown runs of 2 and 14 yards.

Tommy Beecher was 15 for 17 with 159 yards passing for the Flames (6-2, 3-0 Big South). Beecher threw touchdown passes of 6 and 8 yards to Will Quarles. Beecher also scored on a 5-yard run.

The Blue Hose (0-8, 0-5) were held without a touchdown until the final nine minutes of the game. Brandon Miley threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Michael Ruff and a 29-yarder to Sean Adegbola.

NEWBERRY 24, LENOIR-RHYNE 21

In Hickory, N.C., Gerald Legree had a career-high 153 yards on 22 carries and scored on a 73-yard run in the fourth quarter to lead Newberry.

The Indians (5-4, 3-3 South Atlantic Conference) scored 21 unanswered points and limited Lenoir-Rhyne to 4 yards of total offense in the third quarter en route to the win.

Newberry's Brandon Gantt scored on runs of 1 and 11 yards in the third quarter.
