Appalachian State routs Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. --- Armanti Edwards rushed for four touchdowns and had two passing scores to lead Appalachian State to a 52-27 win over Furman on Saturday.

Edwards was 25 for 36 passing for 355 yards and ran for 106 yards on 13 carries to help the Mountaineers (6-2, 5-0 Southern Conference) extend their conference winning streak to 17 games. Appalachian State also has won six consecutive games.

The Mountaineers jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter after Edwards threw a 16-yard touchdown to Ben Jordan and the quarterback had rushing scores of 3 and 4 yards. Edwards also had rushing scores of 1 and 5 yards.

Edwards connected with former Strom Thurmond standout CoCo Hillary on a 21-yard passing score to increase Appalachian State's lead to 49-20 in the third. Matt Cline had eight catches for 122 yards.

Furman's Jordan Sorrells threw for 165 yards and two TDs for the Paladins (4-4, 3-3).

THE CITADEL 28, SAMFORD 16

In Charleston, S.C., Tommy Edwards threw two second-half touchdown passes in his collegiate debut to lead The Citadel to a victory over Samford.

Edwards, a freshman walk-on, replaced injured starter Miguel Starks late in the second quarter and led the Bulldogs (4-4, 2-3 Southern Conference) to 28 consecutive points and a 28-10 lead with 2:41 remaining.

Edwards threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Van Dyke Jones with 7:29 left in the third quarter and then hit Alex Sellars on an 11-yard pass that gave The Citadel a 14-10 lead with 10:06 on the clock. Edwards finished 10-for-20 for 141 yards.

Terrell Dallas added a 5-yard touchdown and Cortez Allen returned an interception 82 yards for the Bulldogs' other scores. It was Allen's second interception of the game.

Dustin Taliaferro threw for 130 yards and Connor Lowery added 94 yards passing and a touchdown for Samford (3-5, 1-4).

CHATTANOOGA 24,

WESTERN CAROLINA 20

In Chattanooga, Tenn. Craig Camay kicked four field goals and Chris Awuah scored the winning touchdown as Chattanooga rallied to defeat Western Carolina.

Camay split the uprights from 30, 27, 37 and 28 yards, the last bringing the Mocs (5-3, 3-3 Southern Conference) within 20-18.

Awuah capped a 16-play, 77-yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown with 3:33 remaining to end Chattanooga's two-game losing streak.

Western Carolina (1-7, 1-5) took a 13-0 lead on two field goals by Blake Bostic and a 1-yard touchdown run by Michael Johnson on fourth down.

ELON 34, WOFFORD 6

In Spartanburg, S.C., Terrell Hudgins caught three touchdowns and set a Football Championship Subdivision record as Elon beat Wofford (2-6, 1-4 Southern Conference).

Hudgins, who had 11 catches for 153 yards, had his 24th 100 yard game to surpass NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, who set the previous record from 1981-84 at Mississippi Valley State.

Hudgins set the record when Scott Riddle connected with him on a 32-yard touchdown, giving the Phoenix (7-1, 5-0) in the first quarter.

Riddle was 31-for-44 passing for 323 yards and one interception for Elon.
