Tarver nomination heads to Senate

State Sen. Ed Tarver is a step closer to becoming the area's top federal prosecutor.

The U.S. Senate's Judiciary Committee voted unanimously Thursday to forward his nomination as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia to the full Senate, according to the committee's Web site.

The final step will be a Senate vote, according to committee press secretary Erica Chabot.

Mr. Tarver was nominated for the post by President Obama earlier this month to replace Edmund A. Booth Jr., who retired.

If confirmed by the Senate, Mr. Tarver will be in charge of a district covering 43 counties, stretching from Thurmond Lake to the Florida border with offices in Augusta, Savannah, Statesboro, Brunswick, Dublin and Waycross.

The job pays about $150,000 a year.

Investigators discover Aiken County meth lab

Aiken County investigators discovered a meth lab at a Bath mobile home late Wednesday night.

Aiken County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to Bay Street around 10:30 p.m. on a report of a suspicious vehicle, Aiken County sheriff's Sgt. Dave Myers said. Deputies found one subject in the vehicle, which led to them to search a nearby mobile home, he said.

When investigators entered the home, they found evidence that the occupants had been running a meth lab there, Sgt. Myers said.

"They smelled paint thinner, saw a white, smoky fog and glass beakers, all things that would indicate a meth lab operation," he said.

The sheriff's office's narcotics team, HAZMAT and other state agencies assisted with the investigation. Further details on the arrest were unavailable.

A Pizza Hut employee had a night deposit bag stolen from her at gunpoint early Thursday morning at the restaurant at 2519 Tobacco Road.

According to a Richmond County sheriff's report, a man ran up to the employee as she was trying to enter her vehicle. The robber pointed a black semi-automatic gun at the woman and threatened to shoot her if she would not give him money. After giving him a night deposit bag containing about $700, the robber ran into a wooded area.

The robber was described as a black man between the ages of 23 and 26, about 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing about 170 to 190 pounds, and wearing a brown hoodie with a scarf over his face, the report states.
